Description

1968 Ferrari 365 GT 2+2
s/n 13795 Engine no. 13795GT
Light Metallic Blue with Black Leather

At the time of its introduction, the 365 GT 2+2 represented significant advances for Ferrari, particularly their 2+2 models. The combination of independent suspension all around for the first time on a 2+2 model and the new torque tube arrangement made the cars quieter and more comfortable than ever before. The inclusion of additional convenience and luxury features further enhanced the car’s comfort, while the familiar front-mounted 4.4 liter V12 and striking Pininfarina styling ensured that the car retained all of the traditional positive Ferrari traits.

This particular example is a European market car which was imported to the USA by Thomas Crohman in the late 1970s or early 1980s. Located in Southern California by the mid 1980s, the car received an engine and transmission overhaul by Modena Sport Cars, Inc in West Hollywood in 1985, at which time the odometer showed 91,000 kms. In 1992, still under the same ownership, the front suspension was rebuilt. In 2000, the carburetors were rebuilt, as was the starter, and the radiator was re-cored. More recently, under the current ownership period which started in 2003, work includes a rebuilt alternator, carburetor tune and balance, distributor service and tune, replacement of the spark plug wires and voltage regulator, replacement of select front and rear suspension bushings and the rear shocks (a conversion to coil over units), servicing of the CV joints, replacement of window motors, and fuel pumps, re-coring the radiator, and replacement of the ignition switch, as well as the starter. This is clearly an actively maintained example, with over $48,000 in receipts on file for regular maintenance. Accordingly, the car starts easily and operates quite well, including the air conditioning. We invite perspective buyers to perform a formal pre-purchase inspection.

Cosmetically, the car is a “nice driver” example. The paint appears to be the original color, and is in good condition throughout. Likewise, the brightwork is in “good driver” condition, as is the window glass. The car sits on correct Cromadora wheels, with a matching spare. Original leather upholstery remains in the interior, which is showing some age, but is quite serviceable. The dash wood is very good, and presents beautifully, as does the headliner. The engine bay would respond well to a thorough detail, but is largely correct in terms of equipment including the battery hold down, and air cleaner housing. The trunk is in lovely original condition, and houses the impressive and largely complete tool and jack bag.

The 365 GT 2+2 was built for the sporting enthusiast with friends or children and gives the quintessential 1960s vintage Ferrari experience with the last of the curvaceous Pininfarina–bodied grand tourers, powered by the final iteration of the Colombo V–12 two–cam engine. The interior is roomy for two adults and two children for long distance touring. This is an outstanding opportunity to acquire an example of this underappreciated model. With lovely styling reminiscent of the Princess de Rethy 330 and 500 Superfast, as well as a capable powertrain and comparatively modern chassis, a nicely sorted 365 GT 2+2 is a pleasure to own and use.
