1969 Ferrari 365 GT 2+2
s/n 12597. Engine No. 12587
Aubergine with Black Leather Interior
One of just 800 Ferrari 365 GT 2+2s built between 1968 and 1970, this covered headlight, front-engine, V12 represents excellent value and collectability, and is situated to appreciate nicely in the coming years.
The 365 GT 2+2 was created to satisfy the needs on the sporting enthusiast with friends and/or family. The interior is roomy, and will functionally sit two adults and two children for long distance touring. Indeed, the ideal use for the 365 GT 2+2 is long distance travel, as this car is equipped with air conditioning, power windows, and variable ratio power steering. This particular car was built for the US market, and was part of Bruce Trenery`s stable for no less than 9 years. It proved to be the ideal car for Ferrari club events when traveling with the family, and for this reason, saw much more use than either the 330 GTC or the 246 GT that he owned at that time.
The car has been well cared for. We have records for all work completed back to 1976. The car has been in the western United States since at least 1976, and probably earlier. At 44,000 miles, the clutch was replaced and gearbox and flywheel overhauled. Much interior upholstery and trim work was carried out at around 55,000 miles and at 58,000 miles, the engine was removed and rebuilt by G. Westbrook of Atlanta Georgia. At 64,000 miles, the wheels bearings were replaced and some of the front suspension restored. In 1987, the engine compartment was cleaned, painted, and detailed, and the gearbox was rebuilt again as well. The alternator and power steering belts were replaced in 1997. The front suspension was rebuilt in 1998, at which point new springs and shocks were installed. The heater units and ignition systems were also restored in 1998. The distributors were rebuilt by Patrick Ottis in 1999, and a valve adjustment was done at this time as well. The radiator was recored, also in 1999. At 73,000 miles, new front brake pads were installed. In 2000, the ring and pinion were replaced and differential rebuilt by Patrick Ottis. At 75,753 miles, Mr. Ottis performed a compression test which revealed the following results: 180, 175, 155, 180, 175, 175, 180, 185, 185, 175, 185, and 180 lbs. In total, we have receipts of well over $40,000. Currently the car has 81,829 actual miles.
The body is relatively straight, but the paint needs to be renewed. The car has certainly been repainted and may be a color change. There are several small chips and use marks on the sides and front of the car, in addition to general deterioration of the finish. There is evidence that there was some bodywork done to the nose around the prancing horse emblem. The gaps at the bottom of the doors are enlarged, but the remainder of the panel gaps is good. The car has not been abused, just enjoyed. The new owner should consider repainting it, which will remedy many of these minor issues. The chrome is good throughout, but not perfect. This example has been tastefully retrofitted with attractive Plexiglas headlight covers and sits on nice Borrani wire wheels with Pirelli P400 tires.
The interior is in much better condition than the exterior. Much upholstery work has been done over the years, but the actual leather material is probably original. The front and rear seats are good considering their age and mileage, but not perfect. There is some tearing and creasing, but the leather is remarkably supple. The dash wood and leather are excellent, as are all the original gauges and switches. The blue carpets are fitted inlays. The headliner is excellent. The rear shelf area has been covered in soft black carpet to avoid sun glare on the rear window. The factory wood wheel is in extremely nice condition. In the 1980s this car was fitted with an Alpine cassette player and equalizer.
The engine compartment is well above `driver` standards. Correct fuel lines and plug wires have been used. The underside is generally rust free, benefiting from its long-time California ownerships, but is not detailed. The trunk is in very good, unrestored condition.
Because of the careful upkeep, the car drives like a dream. The brakes stop the car evenly and effectively, the transmission is smooth with excellent second gear synchro. The motor sounds wonderful, revs freely and makes excellent power, with minimal smoke. The front suspension feels tights and the car tracks straight. Because of the power steering, superb visibility, and comfortable seating, the 365 GT 2+2 is an easy car to drive.
With the car comes extra keys, original manual and parts books, tool roll with some tools, jack bag with hammer and aftermarket jack, spare wire wheel and tire, several extra parts (used), and records for all work done back to 1976.
