1969 Ferrari 365GTC
s/n 12239, engine no. 12239
Fly Yellow with Black Leather Interior
Widely regarded to be one of the best driving and most usable classic Ferraris, the 330 and 365 GTC and are highly sought after today. While 600 examples of the 330 were built, just 149 365GTCs were built. Both variants are a pleasure to drive, even in today's traffic, thanks to the wide torque band provided by the engine, and the tractability and balance that result from the combination of the transaxle and torque tube. 365s are substantially the same as 330s, with the exception of the 4.4 liter engine in the 365, which replaced the 4.0 liter engine of 330s. The 365s are also fitted with Daytona type transaxle and pull up emergency brake arrangement replacing the umbrella type fitted to all but the latest 330s. From a driver's standpoint, the 365 GTC is the premier roadgoing Ferrari coupe produced in the 1960s and is particularly desirable not only for its increased power, but also its rarity. Because of their elegant understated lines, superb driving experience, and classic Ferrari layout, these cars have a timeless appeal that continues to earn them a spot in the collections of the most discerning Ferrari enthusiasts.
This particular car was completed on the 3rd of March 1969 and was originally finished in white with dark beige interior. It is believed to have been sold new in Italy and it eventually found its way to California, where it resided with an owner in Venice, Califorinia for 17 years from the 1980s until approximately 2003. Prior to that ownership, the car was in Baltimore, Maryland. During the 1980s, the car was maintained by Bob Wallace, including an engine rebuild in 1987. In 2004, the car received significant sorting Bobileff Motorcars, including a new interior.
The car was then sold on to its current owner who has performed considerable further work. From 2006 to 2009, the following work was performed: complete engine rebuild by Allen Bishop, rebuilt carburetors by Pierce Manifolds, rebuilt transaxle, rebuilt distributors, Pertronix ignition installed, rebuilt konis including new front springs, new CV joints and boots, AC compressor rebuilt and new AC hoses, clutch, and pressure switches fitted, radiator and heater core rebuilt, heater valves, ducting, and fans repaired, replaced, and rebuilt as required, brake servo and master cylinder rebuilt, wheels restored, engine compartment detailed, electrical system sorted, washer pump and bag restored, new plug wires fitted, new door gaskets fitted, quartz clock conversion performed, new sway bar bushes installed, horn compressor rebuilt, headers coated, and much other miscellaneous work performed.
The car makes a strong cosmetic impression, with glossy paint and a straight body. Close inspection reveals some paint imperfections such as orange peel and some drips below the bumpers, and minor bubbling in one of the rear wheel arch lips, but the car is fresh and attractive overall. The doors fit and operate well. The trunk sits proud at the back and the gaps could be better on both the front and rear deck lids. The chrome is in very good shape with no significant wear or deterioration other than a thin spot on one of the bumpers and some minor wear on the door handles. The glass and lights are generally excellent, save for some light road rash on the front windscreen. The car is equipped with Carello headlamps. The wheels are excellent and wear correct Michelin VR XWX tires. The car wears black California Year of Manufacture plates.
The interior is in excellent shape having been redone by Bobileff in 2004. The upholstery on the seats, console, door panels, and dashboard is excellent. The seats were done in high quality vinyl and are somewhat overstuffed but are excellent otherwise. The gauges, switches, and controls are in very nice shape as is the wood. The headliner appears to be original and is excellent considering this, with some minor signs of aging. The carpets are in very good shape and the steering wheel is excellent. The car has a modern Blaupunkt radio.
The engine compartment is very clean and nicely detailed. It is correct in presentation aside from the red spark plug wires, which are made of modern silicone as opposed to the original Cavis. The correct wrinkle finish is present on the valve covers and the correct semi-gloss finish is on the firewall and inner fenders. The trunk is in very nice shape as well and the car has an original jack bag with jack, and also contains an original type Becker radio. The undercarriage is solid although there is evidence of previous rust repairs in the rockers, which were done to driver standards. Much of the suspension components have been refinished and the driveline is clean.
The car runs and drives well. The engine is well-tuned and makes great power, in addition to sounding great. The gearbox has excellent synchromesh. The chassis and brakes are good and the overall feeling of the car is very special.
Long a favorite among Ferrari connoisseurs who appreciate their excellent road manners and elegant styling, the secret around the 330 and 365 GTC is out, with a recent explosion in values. After years in the shadow of some of their less understated brethren, GTCs are now appreciated for their mechanical sophistication, performance, elegance, and rarity. Just 149 examples were built and this example has seen extensive recent work and is an ideal example to drive and enjoy extensively. It comes with Ferrari Certificato di Identificazione, original book pouch with manual and 365 supplement, jack bag with jack, copy of the build sheets, and a binder of service records and other documentation dating as far back as 1987.
