1969 Mercedes-Benz 280SL s/n 113.040-10-009991 Metallic Grey with Black Interior Representing Mercedes` trend towards producing more usable and practical sports cars, the 230/250/280SL line was meant to replace both the 190SL and the illustrious 300SL. The car was a comfortable two-seater that was to be neither too big nor too expensive, and exhibited excellent roadholding thanks to the innovative and sophisticated rear suspension design. Built to Mercedes` usually high standards and employing excellent visibility, the cars were popular and sold well. The cars were continuously developed, with the 280SL being the ultimate version of the car, with its larger more powerful engine and all around disc brakes. The later examples, especially American ones, were generally softer, with the almost universal fitment of automatic transmissions. This car, however, as an Italian delivery European example features a rare and desirable 4-speed manual transmission, European headlamps, metric gauges, and no bumper overriders, side markers, or headrests. This car is also a `California coupe`, fitted with hardtop only and no soft top. The car has been well-maintained by its enthusiastic owner, with light service completed in January of 2008, and several thousand dollars of receipts over the last few years. Other recent work has included the refinishing of the dash wood, replacement of the heater levers and some weather stripping, new tires, and upgraded stereo with CD player. The car has also had four new brake calipers, new master cylinder, new brake lines, new tie rods, and four new shock absorbers fitted. Countless other items have been addressed, including motor mounts, flex disc, and valve adjustment, all within the last 2000km. Cosmetically, the car is attractive, with the lovely color combination and clean styling afforded by the European specification. The paintwork is a driver quality job in nice condition. The paint is on the thick side and shows some orange peel but is on the whole attractive. There is one area of bubbling the size of a quarter on the left front fender near the side marker lamp. The glass and lenses are excellent, including the difficult to find European headlamps. There is a small area of delamination to the bottom right windscreen corner. The chrome is excellent and has likely been replated at some point. The paint on the hubcaps is showing its age. The interior is in excellent condition. The frequently deteriorated wood trim has been redone and is excellent in this car. The upholstery is in very nice condition, as are the carpets, while the dashboard is very good as well. There is a rear bench seat with belt as well. There is an aftermarket CD player fitted and the interior is a pleasant place to spend time, with excellent craftsmanship and visibility. The trunk is excellent with rust-free floor, nice trunk mat, and original spare tire bag. The engine compartment is correct and shows evidence of proper care, but is dirty This is a great opportunity to acquire an interesting specification European car that has been well kept. It has been properly looked after and will make a reliable and robust car for its new owner to enjoy, especially with the warmer months coming. The car comes with a cover, as well as a host of original books including the manuals, service book, and even an original Mercedes-Benz service manual for the car.
