General Overview

The 911, originally revealed in the fall of 1963 at the Frankfurt Motor Show, was the much-heralded replacement for the highly successful 356. The 911 arrived with more power, more comfort, and a favorable price when compared against comparable cars of the period. But Porsche worried about losing customers due to the higher priced six-cylinder models. So, the 912 four-cylinder models were added to the lineup.

Agile and capable, the 912 became a worthy sports car for budget minded enthusiasts who enjoyed working on their cars. While sales were brisk for a range of models, over the ensuing decades few examples have survived due in part to the greater attention placed on the 911. Properly tuned and set up for enjoyable use, a well-prepped 912 offers excellent balance (less rear end weight), great handling, and the added plus of nearly the identical exterior appearance to the 911.

General Overview of This Example

This Porsche was purchased new in Culver City, California and retained by the original owners until 1991. Service stamps and dates for services in the Porsche service booklet accompanying the car span 1969-1974, with the last entry recorded at 33,082 miles in November 1974. California registration cards accompanying the car date back to 1975. Copies of service invoices dating back to 1978 continue the ownership and service history to current ownership. Service records span 46 years of general maintenance including purchase by the current owner in 1991.

The current family owners are believed to be the second owners of this matching numbers Porsche 912. Although the color was changed from the original Polo Red to the current white and the carburetors have been upgraded from Solex units to Webers, the car has been largely unchanged and has benefited from long term ownership, and ongoing care by the same Porsche specialist, Roy Sasaki Restorations, San Jose, CA. The car has been recently treated to body work, comprehensive repaint in white, and interior selective restoration to various interior components. The work has been performed to a high driver level while maintaining the original matching numbers engine. Items of note that have been more recently replaced or restored include a new fuel tank, new front and rear floor pans, front suspension components, longitudinal and battery box metal work, and replacement of the left and right front fenders.

General Condition

Today this Porsche 912 presents as a driver level example with recent paint and interior work that elevates the visual presentation to a higher cosmetic level. The exterior finish is glossy and rubber trim is in very good condition with many detailed components sourced and replaced when the more recent body and paint work was performed. The doors, hood, and deck lid all open and shut well with generally good panel gaps. The side and rear glass retain the Sekurit band etches indicative of original glass while an aftermarket windshield has been more recently replaced. The emblems, lenses, and various trim are in very good to excellent condition. The Fuchs wheels are in generally good condition but have not been refinished, indicating these could very well be the original finishes. A matching set of Pirelli P600 P205/60 R15 radial tires are mounted. The overall exterior presentation is satisfying and reflective of a car that can be enjoyably used with further freshening to enhance details as desired.

The interior combines original and reupholstered areas resulting in a generally cohesive outcome. The front seats and door cards have been professionally reupholstered, and the carpet has been replaced, while the rear seating and rear side panels display finishes and materials consistent with preserved factory original Porsches. The gauges are in very good visual condition, retaining good function, contrasting dial faces, and clear lenses. The headliner and dash pad are both in excellent condition, both of which might very well be original to the car. The radio has been replaced some time ago with an older contemporary Pioneer in-dash stereo. The various controls, black basket-weave dash band material, and knee pad are in generally good condition, also appearing to be original.

Beneath the engine lid, the matching numbers engine and tidy engine compartment reflect an honest combination of originality and preservation. The engine bay and engine have been mechanically addressed but not restored, retaining the moderate patina that appears consistent with unrestored original Porsches of this vintage. A pair of Weber carburetors were installed under current ownership and have been recently tuned and adjusted by a local Porsche specialist in preparation for consignment.

The front storage compartment is in excellent visual condition and contains a matching Fuchs spare wheel, a battery installed June 2024, and displays the original factory chassis stamping, correct aluminum chassis plate, and recently installed new fabric liners. The underside of the car is reflective of general use and shows evidence of recent replacement floor panel and metal work performed under current ownership.

The car starts, runs, and drives very well. The engine is properly sorted and any driver familiar with vintage Porsches will delight in the smooth idle and progressive acceleration this Porsche 912 delivers. Suspension, steering, and brakes are all consistent with standards of this era and the gearbox operates smoothly with good synchros. In all, the driving manners are quite nice and well-balanced.

This is a very complete, documented, matching numbers Porsche 912 with known history since new and recent cosmetic work performed to high driver standards. Ready to start the next chapter in ownership history, this handsome 912 will delight any Porsche enthusiast who enjoys driving and participating in local Porsche events.
