Description

1970 Mercedes 280 SE 3.5 Cabriolet Conversion s/n 11102610001999 Cream with Palomino Interior Introduced in 1961, the W111 and W112 generation of Mercedes-Benz S-Class replaced the famed `Adenauer` cars and was the absolute top of the line car. They incorporated a number of advanced technical and convenience features including sophisticated independent suspension all around, fuel injection, and disc brakes. Extraordinarily expensive when new, the convertible version allowed elegant open air cruising for four and remains a valuable and sought after car, with prices well over $150,000. This particular car is a European model and was converted to a Cabriolet many years ago. It is a factory floor shift electric windows car that has been in California since 1994 and has been fitted with an aftermarket air conditioning system. The car has been well-maintained, with much work completed in the last 5,000 miles at considerable expense. This work has included rebuilt transmission, new exhaust system, complete air conditioning system overhaul, new fuel pump and hoses, new Michelin tires, rebuilt front suspension, new front brakes, new motor mounts, some work to the heating system. Cosmetically, the car is in attractive driver condition. The paint presents well but shows several chips and blemishes. The panels are straight and rust-free, and the lights and glass excellent. The car has Bosch fog lamps that display some pitting. The chrome is shiny but does show some light pitting and haze. The interior has recently reupholstered front seats employing MB Tex material, while the rear seats are upholstered with older leather. The black carpets are very good, as is the all important dashboard with its numerous complex switches and instruments. The wood on the dashboard is good, while the windscreen trims are showing some cracking. A Becker Europa radio is fitted. The trunk and engine compartment have an honest unrestored feel. The trunk mat is excellent and the recessed spare tire wells are completely free of rust. The area of the trunk floor under the mat does show some corrosion. A Nakamichi CD changer is installed as well. The engine compartment shows the correct Mercedes-Benz battery, while the valve covers are polished. This car is an excellent opportunity to enjoy elegant open-air cruising and the traditional Mercedes values of craftsmanship and engineering. Available at over $100,000 less than the cost of an original convertible 3.5, this car is sure to appeal to the enthusiast wishing to enjoy the open air experience and V8 engine, without the now significant financial commitment.
