Description

1970 Mercedes-Benz 280SL
s/n 11304410014565
Red with Black Interior

Representing Mercedes-Benz’s trend towards producing more usable and practical sports cars, the 230/250/280SL line was meant to replace both the 190SL and the illustrious 300SL. The car was a comfortable two-seater that was to be neither too big nor too expensive, and exhibited excellent roadholding thanks to the innovative and sophisticated rear suspension design. Built to Mercedes’ usually high standards and employing excellent visibility, the cars were popular and sold well. The cars were continuously developed, with the 280SL being the ultimate version of the car, with its larger more powerful engine and all around disc brakes.

This particular car is finished in its factory delivered color of DB568 signal red and came from Canada before being acquired by a collector in Arizona. It has a brand new canvas soft top and is equipped with 4-speed manual transmission and factory Frigiking air conditioning. The body is free of bubbling and has excellent door fit. The fit on the front and rear deck lids is satisfactory. The paintwork was done to driver standards and is shiny although close inspection reveals some orange peel and minor surface imperfections. The chrome is in good condition with light pitting on the window trims and some surface scratches and small dents on the front bumper. The hub caps are in very nice condition. The light lights and lenses are in good shape other than a crack in the plastic headlight surround trim on the left side.

The interior is in very good condition, with what appears to be original upholstery and carpets in very nice condition. The car retains its original Kangol safety belts and the wood has been recently restored and is excellent. The car is equipped with wood-rimmed Nardi steering wheel. The gauges, switches, and controls appear unrestored and very nice considering this. The headliner is in good shape with a few small tears. The car retains its original Becker Europa radio which was a factory option delivered on this car.

The engine compartment shows signs of maintenance and is correct in appearance but not detailed. The trunk is unrestored in appearance and retains its correct rubber mat and spare tire cover.

This is a great opportunity to acquire a nice driver level 280SL with an interesting specification which includes 4-speed, AC, hard top, and Becker Europa radio. Cosmetically attractive and in good running and driving condition, this car is ready to enjoy.
