Description

1970 Porsche 914-6 s/n 9140430882 Dark Red Metallic with Tan Interior This is an authentic 1970 Porsche 914-6. Approximately 3,360 914-6's were produced between 1970-1972. Of those, roughly 2,000 found their way to the shores of the United States. Indeed, you are looking at one of those 2,000, making it one of the more rare models Porsche has ever produced. It has been restored, and is a rust free example is in impeccable cosmetic and mechanical condition. It has spent its entire life in the sunny and temperate climate of California. This particular 914-6 is even rarer due to its color, and it highly sought after by 914-6 aficionados and collectors. The majority of 914-6's were painted black, white, or orange. This particular car was originally painted burgundy, making it quite rare among 914-6's. And though the car has been repainted in a color incredibly similar to that of the original, it is still one of the more unique and beautiful examples of a 914-6 you will find anywhere. As stated earlier, this car has spent its entire life in California. The car has four known owners, and is currently owned by a college professor here in the Bay Area. Some years ago, the car was owned by well known PCA and GGR member Ken Mack, former owner of Ken's Sportech of Campbell, California. While driving this car at Sears Point, Mr. Mack was involved in a shunt. The car was taken to renowned body man Cecil Beach at Bodystyles in San Jose and meticulously repaired. All the work was very professionally done and the resulting car is a superb example with no evidence of repairs visible from the underside or in the bodywork. The body is incredibly straight, and all of the gaps are excellent. Indeed, the photos corroborate this. It was recently repainted in a color very close to stock. The repaint was a very high quality job, and there are no significant scratches are chips anywhere on the car. All the stainless trim and window frames are straight and all lenses and badges new or restored. The car sits on brand new tires (Bridgestone RE 750), and beautifully re-polished rims. The dash, door panels, seats, and console upholstery are exceptional. The carpets are nice, with very minor discoloration. The door jambs and rocker sills are all nicely detailed. Both the frontal compartment and rear stowage area are fully restored, repainted, and nicely detailed. The engine compartment is also detailed and remains completely stock. One of the previous owners, Ken Mack built a more powerful engine, beefing up the suspension for auto crossing and time trialing, but kept most of the rest of the car completely stock, including the exterior and interior. Mr. Mack put in a race-bred motor; high compression pistons, 2.7 cams, and a 2.2 liter motor, which may be from a 911S. The exact mileage on the motor since the rebuild is unknown, but suspected to be 40,000+ miles. It puffs a bit of smoke when you start it up, especially if it has been sitting for a while, but once it is running, the smoke goes away and it runs flawlessly. A recent compression check was done by Tom Amon at Mobile Works West, and all cylinders were between 175-185 lbs. The carburetors are in good shape, and there seems to be nothing that is urgently needed at this time as far as the engine is concerned. It pumps out an estimated 160 hp, and has quite a bit of torque, especially in the lower gears. The current owner has kept all receipts for work done during his ownership. Since 2002 all of the seals were replaced in and around the cabin, the flywheel replaced when he performed a full service on the car a few months ago. The clutch was virtually new. The first and second gear synchros are strong, both up and down. The brakes were serviced recently as well. The rear rotors are a bit worn. The front rotors and pads, and rear pads have been replaced, new OEM rear rotors, still in the box, come with the car. The car also comes with two front rotors that are cross-drilled for better braking. These cost over $600 new. With the car come brand new Lloyd car mats, a car cover, tool bag with tools, extra front and rear brake rotors, and the space saver spare, and all records for work done during the current ownership period.
