Metal Blue with Cream Leather
The absolute top of the line model in its day, the 280SE 3.5 Convertible remains a sought-after and collectible car today. They are the last of the classic, almost Baroque Mercedes 2-doors, and the last of the full-sized convertibles, presenting an elegant and comfortable way to enjoy open-air motoring with four of your full-sized friends or family members. From a technological standpoint, the cars represented Mercedes` typical engineering prowess, with fuel-injected overhead cam V8 power plants, independent suspension all around, power steering, power disc brakes, and many convenience features. Safety was also a concern, with crumple zones, padded steering wheel and dashboard components, and three-point safety belts. The truly extraordinary qualities of this car lie in its attention to detail and craftsmanship. Very few objects of any kind, cars or otherwise, are quite so robustly built, and this is particularly striking when compared with today`s cars. These cars were the last ones to be built largely by hand, and when new, they were astronomically expensive. Consequently, few were sold, and they have always been rare.
This particular example has been, according to a previous owner, the subject of a $90,000 restoration effort. Indeed the car shows, and runs, exceptionally well. The bulk of the restorative work was carried out in 1992, reportedly, while still in the hands of the original owner who was a Nevada resident. The mechanical work included rebuilds of the engine, transmission, driveshaft, and axels. The suspension was rebuilt with new springs, and bushings. The radiator was re-cored, among other minor jobs. This work was done by Greg Lufat, of Carson City, Nevada. The interior and top was restored in 1997, mostly likely retaining, and re-dying in the original color, the original leather. The dash wood was also restored to very high standards. The top was replaced with correct canvas material. The paint work (done in 1992), which remains fantastic, was also done in the original color and to very high standards. The original paintwork can be seen in the engine bay. Select records are on file for the above mentioned work.
During the current ownership period considerable effort has been made to ensure all systems are operating properly, and the car continues to present beautifully. Within the last 8 months a new battery, stainless exhaust system, differential seal, and four new tires have been installed, with all work being done at a Mercedes dealership. The air conditioning system has also been serviced, and a fully reworked Becker Autosound period-type radio installed. A Complete service including all fluids and filters, and several minor cosmetic improvements were made where needed. Including parts, approximately $10,000 has been spent, and the finished product is a beautifully presented, strong running, handmade automobile.
While perhaps a notch below an outright show car, this 280 SE 3.5 is well above a nice driver example, and boasts beautiful paintwork with only minor flaws, over exceedingly straight, solid panels and floors, and a very presentable interior. The trunk space is also restored, as is the convertible top. The underside is free of damage or corrosion repairs, although not overly detailed.
This is a great opportunity to acquire a longtime dry-climate example of one of the last of Mercedes’ hand-built cars. Understandably collectable due to their rarity, quality, and elegance, these cars are vulnerable to corrosion, making this car’s excellent structural condition a particularly desirable characteristic.
