Light Ivory with Chocolate Brown Leather
The absolute top of the line model in its day, the 280SE 3.5 Convertible remains a sought-after and collectible car today. They are the last of the classic, almost Baroque Mercedes 2-doors, and the last of the full-sized convertibles, presenting an elegant and comfortable way to enjoy open-air motoring with four of your full-sized friends or family members. From a technological standpoint, the cars represented Mercedes’ typical engineering prowess, with fuel-injected overhead cam V8 power plants, independent suspension all around, power steering, power disc brakes, and many convenience features. Safety was also a concern, with crumple zones, padded steering wheel and dashboard components, and three-point safety belts. The truly extraordinary qualities of this car lie in its attention to detail and craftsmanship. Very few objects of any kind, cars or otherwise, are quite so robustly built, and this is particularly striking when compared with today’s cars. These cars were the last ones to be built largely by hand, and when new, they were astronomically expensive. Consequently, just 1,232 were constructed, and they have always been rare.
This 1971 Mercedes-Benz 280SE 3.5 Cabriolet has been a prized possession and favorite of the previous owner for more than 15 years. Finished in the classic colors of Light Ivory (DB 670) with Chocolate Brown leather and Dark Brown (746) soft top, it has all the presence expected of a top-of-the-range Mercedes-Benz. Although not a freshly restored piece, it has recently been fastidiously detailed and makes an extremely strong presentation. The recent detail works included buffing and polishing of the paint, refinishing the wood trim, reupholstering the interior and a comprehensive cleaning of the engine compartment.
Of the utmost importance on a unibody car such as the 111 series 280SE 3.5 is the structural condition of the body itself. This example has very straight panels, outstanding panel match and door shut, and the original spot welds are visible in the interior of the trunk. While we are not familiar with the early history of this particular car, we see no evidence of major damage or rust repairs about the car, and pre-purchase inspections are welcome to confirm this.
Mechanically the car is in very good order. It starts easily, idles well, and run strong with good power and no smoke. The transmission shifts normally, and the brakes pull the car down straight and effectively. The gauges, lights, and other ancillaries all work, including the period Becker radio, and the Behr A/C system which blows frigid cold.
Cosmetically speaking, the car is excellent. The paint is done in a wonderful color likely original to the car, and certainly period appropriate for such a dignified automobile. The interior upholstery is all very good, with just a hint of patina appropriate for a well cared for car of this age. The refinished wood trim is outstanding, and the convertible top is also in very good order. The chrome inside and out is also excellent, with little or no signs of age. The car sits on nice factory wheels with good tires.
With air conditioning, the original Becker AM/FM radio and room for five, this Mercedes-Benz will transport passengers with incomparable style. Included with the sale is the jack and spare tire. This is a great opportunity to acquire of one of the last of Mercedes’ hand-built cars. Understandably collectable due to their rarity, quality, and elegance, these cars are vulnerable to corrosion, making this car’s excellent structural condition a particularly desirable characteristic.
