Description

1972 Alfa Romeo GTV 2000
s/n AR2434750
Rosso Amaranto with Tan Interior

Designed for Bertone by Giorgetto Giugiaro early in his long and illustrious career, the GTV was an immediate favorite from its introduction, initially as the Giulia Sprint GT in 1963. The restrained elegance and perfect proportions of these cars have aged beautifully and the cars survived for over 10 years with relatively light cosmetic changes but significant mechanical upgrades, including the eventual fitment of fuel injection and a 2.0 liter engine. The initial specification, which included 5-speed transmission and Alfa’s excellent alloy twin-cam inline-4, remained relatively unchanged.

The biggest change occurred in 1969 with the elimination of the early “stepped” hood and the change of the nomenclature to GTV. Under the hood was another story all together. Over the years, the engine displacement grew which altered the GTV’s character. The innovative high-revving, carbureted 1570 cc DOHC four (1600) was succeeded by a 1779 cc four (1750) with a SPICA mechanical fuel injection system in the GTV of 1969, and finally the displacement increase to 1962cc (2000) via an increase in bore in 1971.

This particular car is a rare sight on North America soil in that it is a carbureted-from-new European specification example. Unlike the US Market cars, these desirable European Market cars were equipped with two side-draft carburetors continuing Alfa Romeo’s great performance heritage, metric instrumentation, and less intrusive side marker lights. Compared to the US model cars, they were more attractive, and more powerful, and accordingly, command a premium in today’s marketplace.

While there is no early paperwork accompanying the car, close inspection reveals an extremely nice low mileage (79,164 kms) example, in excellent mechanical and structural order, with excellent driver cosmetics.

The paintwork has been redone to a quality appropriate to the value of the car. Generally, a strong and glossy impression is made, but on the lower parts of the car the quality falls down a bit. The brightwork- both stainless and chrome- is straight and excellent throughout. The car sits on new-condition cast alloy GTA replica wheels shod with near new low profile tires which give the car an aggressive stance, while at the same time improving handling.

The interior looks to be entirely original save for the carpets, and is in excellent shape considering. There are two minor splits in the dash at the vent holes, but the dash top is original and otherwise beautiful. The gauges, switchgear, and steering wheel remain original and beautiful, and the stereo has been upgraded to a modern unit. The front and rear seat, door panel, and headliner material is all difficult to fault and appears original.

The engine bay is not detailed to show status, but is original in appearance, complete, and mechanically tidy. The underside is structurally exemplary and retains the factory undercoating. Close inspection does not reveal any corrosion issues or soft spots. The low mileage is evident when inspecting the steering box attachment point to the chassis, which will typically require repairs by the 100,000 mark, and is untouched and in impeccable order on this example.

In keeping with the 79,164 kilometers indicated, this GTV is a wonderful driving car. The engine starts easily, and idles quietly. It produces excellent and linear power across the rev-band, indicating stock internals and factory original cams. The transmission shifts well with excellent synchros warm or cold, both up and down. The power-assisted brakes are functioning normally and stop the car with confidence. We recognize the lack of paperwork and early history may be cause for concern for some potential buyers. We confidently recommend any interested parties perform exhaustive pre-purchase inspection to fully understand just how good this example is.

For much of their lives, GTV 2000s have not been valuable enough to justify proper upkeep, making a genuinely solid, unmodified structurally and mechanically excellent example rare among the majority of cars offered. As a European specification car no less, this is an even more special find.
