Description

1972 Lancia Fulvia 1600 Zagato
s/n 818.750*001108, engine no. 818.540*007840*
Orange with Black Interior

Famous for their exceptional craftsmanship, innovative engineering solutions and disregard for cost accounting with respect to those engineering solutions, pre-Fiat Lancias are, in many ways, in a class of their own. Few cars are as thoughtfully engineered or built, which helps to explain why Lancia encountered a great deal of financial troubles. Among the last of the pre-FIAT cars, the Fulvia was a small car with an interesting specification that included a dual overhead cam narrow angle common cylinder head V4 which powered the front wheels. Dunlop disc brakes on all four corners provided stopping power, and the car bristled with innovation and interesting technical features. Road and Track magazine described the car in 1967 as \"a precision motorcar, an engineering tour de force\" and the car was surprisingly quick for its displacement, and proved to be an effective competition car in for both rally and circuit racing. The cars were available in a variety of body styles including the special Zagato coupe bodywork, which provided excellent visibility, balance, and a surprising amount of space for larger drivers.

This particular car belongs to a collector who bought it in 2013 from an elderly gentleman in LA who had owned the car for approximately 25 years. Originally delivered in Europe, the car has a metric speedometer and is a great driving, tidy, and solid example.

Cosmetically, it is attractive, with glossy paint over straight and solid panels. Close inspection reveals a few chips, light scratches, and some orange peel, but the overall presentation is very attractive and the car is a nice driver level example. The wheels are in excellent shape, and the car wears Michelin XAS tires which give a period correct appearance to the car. The lights and glass are very nice, including the Cibié headlamps. The brightwork is very nice, with light surface scratches on the window trims. The bumpers are quite nice as well.

The interior is excellent overall, with very nice dashboard and upholstery, aside from a split on the passenger’s seat. Aside from that, the seats are excellent, as are the door panels and headliner. The wood dash trim is excellent aside from one small split, and the gauges and controls are excellent. The rubber floor mats are similarly nice. The car is equipped with power windows and the interior dome light works properly.

The engine compartment is honest and tidy, with light soiling from use, but a generally attractive and correct presentation. The car retains correct Solex carburetors and original air cleaner housing, complete with FISPA stenciling. The correct type washer bag is also present.

The car runs and drives well. The engine starts easily and revs freely, and the dogleg 5-speed gearbox has excellent synchromesh. The brakes are effective and the chassis has a nice coherent feel that is comfortable but not overly soft. The steering on these cars is light, precise, and communicative and is one of the car’s best characteristics.

This is an excellent opportunity to acquire a rare, technically interesting, and entertaining classic with Zagato coachwork. While these cars are fairly rare in the United States, they are still relatively common in Italy and therefore parts availability and mechanical knowledge are reasonably easy to come by for a well-connected enthusiast. This example runs and drives great, is structurally sound, and cosmetically attractive, making it an ideal usable classic that will continue to appreciate as interest in these cars increases.
