Chevron was built from the ground up by self-taught engineering genius Derek Bennett. Unlike so many endeavors of this period, Bennett lacked any sort of specialized engineering training or college degree. His expertise, however, evolved from a combined fascination with aircraft and racing. Chevron cars won races in every category entered, right up to Formula One, where a car was planned but never completed. Chevron’s best and most successful cars were 2.0L Sports Racers. Along with Lola, Chevron cars were among the most competitive small bore sports racings cars of the 1970s. Both Chevron and Lola essentially dominated sprint and endurance 2.0L sports car racing, with Chevron winning their class at the famed 24 hours of Le Mans three times: 1974 (B23), 1979, and 1980 (B36).

This particular B23 was delivered new from the factory to veteran racecar driver Mauricio Marcotulli. Having recently sold his Porsche 904, Marcotulli selected this B23 with the idea of competing in several races throughout Europe. His first documented race was recorded August 4, 1973 where Marcotulli placed 5th at the European 2-Litre Championship Trophee Paul Ricard. Later that same year, Marcotulli was entered again in the 2L division at Minano in Italy. After this race, Marcotulli is reported to have planned for additional races, but does not campaign the car competitively after this last entry. By 2005, the car eventually finds its way through a selling dealer in the UK, where it is sold to racing enthusiast Carl Moore of California. Moore performs a comprehensive restoration, later selling it to the current owner, a prominent and well-respected collector and racing enthusiast on the US West Coast. As is sometimes the case with racing cars of this era, another B23, identified as s/n B23-73-14, has been reported to exist in South America.

The current owner has spent a significant amount of time and money preparing this car for competition events, while applying superb racing livery to the beautiful bodywork. Much attention has been devoted to the drivetrain, electrical, and fuel system in order to present a confident racecar – one that can be reliably and competitively campaigned.

Today the car presents beautifully with excellent paint and stunning competition livery as restored most recently by experts at Veloce Motors West, leading racing specialists known for their fastidious racecar preparation and attention to detail. The contrasting red and blue paint scheme is accented by trailing yellow body stripes, which highlight the brilliantly simple but clean body design. The rear of the bodywork flares out gently over the wider rear track, allowing for purposeful cold air intakes. Clever details surround the car, including the engine air intake, functional louvers and scoops, and the brilliantly designed aerodynamic angled rear treatment. The cosmetic condition of the paint and lettering is show quality with great gloss and vivid color. Inside, the cockpit is all business with correct instrumentation, up to date seats and restraint system, proper fire system, and beautifully finished aluminum surfaces. The car sits on proper series wheels with Avon tires (four spare wheels are included with the sale) and has been updated with a correctly anchored roll bar, and dual position rear view mirrors.

Under the lightweight body sections the stunning original frame and suspension design has been lovingly restored with attention to detail using high quality materials and updated fasteners, fittings, and hoses as needed. A great deal of care has gone into the research and preparation of the engine compartment, fuel delivery system, electrical, and suspension components. Literally every part of this B23 has been carefully prepared with attention to cosmetic excellence and mechanical reliability. Performance comes from the exceptional twin-cam Ford engine, which has been recently professionally rebuilt to a high standard by two liter expert Dave Veghar.

Certainly among one of the most comprehensively restored B23 racecars available today, this example is unquestionably ready for a dedicated racing enthusiast to race with confidence in premier historic racing venues in the US and beyond.
