Description

1973 De Tomaso Pantera Group 4 Racecar s/n THPNMR02846 Burgundy Metallic with Silver Stripes The Italian based firm De Tomaso built formula, sports racing, and grand touring cars starting in the early 1960s. GT car production started in limited numbers with the De Tomaso Vallelunga, and followed with the much more successful Pantera. The Pantera was campaigned in Group 3, 4, and 5 classes in many of the world`s most prestigious professional racing events throughout the 1970s including the 24 hours of Le Mans, 24 hours of Daytona, and the 12 Hours of Sebring. With a mid-engine, transaxle lay out similar in dimensions to Ford`s GT 40, the Pantera was well suited to competition and in Group 3 formant won hundreds of races in Italy and Europe. In the US, Panteras were raced in the late 1970s at Sebring, Daytona, Elkhart Lake, and Road Atlanta. This particular chassis was raced in group 4 format by Mark Leuzinger and Mike van der Werff at the famed 12 Hours of Sebring in 1977 and 1978, and by Leuzinger at the 100 miles of Road Atlanta, and the 500 miles of Road America in 1980. The cars best finish was 14th in class and 56th overall at Sebring in 1978. This example has seen moderate modification since its period racing days. Currently the car is fitted with a 358 c.i. NASCAR spec motor with a SVO dry sump Windsor block, Robert Yates aluminum heads, Carrillo rods, Sunny Bryant billet crank, J&E pistons, An air induction roof scoop has been added, along with other very minor body changes from period photos. Wilwood brake calipers and later model adjustable shocks have been installed, along with a newer AutoMeter tachometer. This example also has electric glass side windows. A number of the changes from period were done in an effort to make this racecar more tolerable on the street. Cosmetically, the car is typical of a nice racecar. There are a number of use marks about the car, but the overall impression is strong. There is evidence of various modifications over the years to both the interior and engine compartment for racing and street use. The previous owner raced and participated with this example in Pantera track day events up until 2007, which suggests the car is currently well prepped for racing. Indeed, the car should be very quick as it is motivated by a 600 horsepower power plant! With the car comes a total to two sets of wheels and tires, one set with slicks and one with street legal treaded tires. With period racing history, this particular car is eligible for historic FIA papers which would allow it to compete in events such as the Tour Auto, Le Mans Classic, and historic racing in Europe and in the USA. Details on the history for this car are outlined in De Tomaso Macchina da Corsa: ``The Official Racing History`` by Philippe Olczyk, pages 406-410.
