Description

1973 Ferrari 365 GTS/4 `Daytona` Spyder s/n 17071 Red with Black Leather and Red Inserts Originally shown at the Frankfurt motor show in 1969, the Daytona Spyder was almost instantly collectible. Around 124 genuine Daytona Spyders were built, making them exceedingly rare finds, even when new. In spite of their rarity, or perhaps because of it, they found their way onto the silver screen on such memorable occasions as in `The Gumball Rally` (who can forget Raul Julia`s opinions on the topic of Italian driving: ``What is behind you is not important!``) and `Miami Vice` (even if that was a replica). As a result of the collector car boom of the late 80`s, many coupes were decapitated to replicate this legendary car and consequently, a genuine Spyder is an even more remarkable find today. They are certainly among the most coveted road-going Ferraris ever built and this car is an exceptional opportunity to acquire one. Constructed in July of 1973, this particular car was the next to last `Daytona` Spyder built. It was built for the US market and equipped at the factory with Borrani wire wheels, electric windows, and A/C, and finished in Ferrari red. It was regularly shown at FCA concourses in the 1980s and 1990s by then current owner Raymond Marganges. Currently, the car can be described as an extraordinarily nice driver. Some years ago the car saw a very high quality repaint in its original color. There are around ten noticeable rock chips on the frontal facing areas, and one small paint chip on the right rear wheel arch. There are no other paint flaws of any significance anywhere on the car. The chrome and stainless trim looks to be original throughout, and shows only very minor signs of aging in the form of light hazing and surface pitting. The body seams are generally good, and the gutters rails around the engine and truck bays are straight and fully detailed. The door jams, rocker sills are also nicely polished and detailed. All the lenses look to be original. The right front indicator lens has one small crack, but the balance of the lenses are in excellent condition. The windshield currently installed has a minor crack appearing in front of the driver`s visor area. The car comes with a new windshield. The black canvas top is in good condition and fits properly. The car sits on nicely polished 7 1/2``X 15`` Borrani wire wheels with near new Michelin tires. The interior can be described as excellent. The seats are carpet have almost certainly been reupholstered, and are virtually flawless. The door panels, seats, and console area are all in excellent condition, without any marks, spots, or tears. The carpets are excellent, and are protected by fitted inlays. The dash is finished in the correct `mouse hair` fabric and shows no discoloration or water damage. The period correct Becker Mexico cassette player is still installed, as is the correct cigarette lighter. The factory steering wheel is in good condition. Even the often missing and nearly unattainable retractable sun visors are in place and fully operational. Mechanically the car is also excellent. The engine idles smoothly and quietly, and pulls strong with that V12 Ferrari exhaust shriek to-die-for, and no smoke. Second gear synchro is very good both when warm and cold. The brakes are effective and well balanced. All the gauges, including the clock, are fully operational. The A/C blows, but not very cold. The engine bay is in near show condition, and is complete with window washer bag, fuse box cover, original smog pump, battery hold down, and Magnetti-Marelli electronic ignition boxes. The pulley for the smog pump has been disconnected. The inner fender wells are beautifully painted in correct flat black, and the air cleaner and valve covers are painted in correct wrinkle finish. The trunk is in very good unrestored condition, with correct carpeting throughout. The underside shows evidence of much mechanical work and a very through detailing, although the car has been driven since. All the under panels and frame tubes are straight and solid. There is no visible evidence that the car has ever seen any accident repair, but it was reportedly damaged by a mechanic in 1994 and repaired by Bill Stoessel at Coachcraft in Fillmore, CA. There is absolutely no evidence of any rust or prior rust repair. With the car is the correct tool suitcase, owner`s manuals, and the Borrani wire wheel with Michelin XWX tire. With just 124 genuine `Daytona` Spyders produced they are among the most collectable Ferrari road cars of the era. They have proven to be outstanding investments in years past, and are situated to enjoy dramatic appreciation in the near future.
