Description

1973 Mendeola Motors Manxter
s/n 1132115469
Black Gel Coat with Tan Interior

The original Meyers Manx dune buggies were designed by Californian engineer, artist, boat builder and surfer Bruce Meyers. The cars featured a fiberglass bodyshell coupled with the Volkswagen Beetle pan and power plant. They were small cars, with a wheelbase over 12 inches shorter than a Volkswagen Beetle for lightness and better maneuverability. For this reason, the cars were capable of very quick acceleration and good off-road performance.

The Meyers Manx received widespread recognition when it won the inaugural Mexican 1000 race, the predecessor of the Baja 1000 beating motorcycles, cars and trucks in the process.

This Manxter is a modern continuation of the Meyers Manx. While the original Manx was crude and were powered by Volkswagen Beetle engines, this Manxter is a sophisticated and modernized vehicle that offers shocking performance and a great deal more refinement than conventional dune buggies.

This particular Manxter was custom built to a high specification at massive expense, over $65,000, to create a truly unique vehicle. Powered by a liquid-cooled Subaru flat-6 making approximately 320hp, this vehicle weighs less than 2000 pounds and employs a proprietary 4-Speed with a 10\" ring gear, and Porsche 930 CV joints. The power to weight ratio is outstanding and the performance nothing short of awesome. Built utilizing a section of a 1973 Volkswagen pan (and titled accordingly), the suspension is fully engineered to provide superb handling thanks to a tunable trailing arm suspension with Fox Racing shock absorbers. The vehicle is equipped with front and rear sway bars with urethane bushings and heim joints to ensure precise handling. American Racing 17” and 18” alloy wheels with modern Dunlop performance low profile tires for maximum grip. Disc brakes with cross drilled rotors at all four corners provide stopping power.

Inside, there are Corbeau leather bucket seats, along with full instrumentation by Revolution produced specifically for Mendeola. The example is further enhanced by the addition of a Bessell carbon fiber surf board which completes the “California Cruising” appearance and also conveniently provides the occupants with shade cover.

The engine has a very smart and shiny appearance, adorned with considerable chrome and polished aluminum assuring the 6-cylinder unit does not go unnoticed.

This unique, custom built-to-order Manxter is the last to be built with a 6-cylinder engine on a Volkswagen pan (utilizing a Volkswagen chassis number), and one of just two featuring this stunning black gel-coat finish. It has stunning performance, with nearly unmatched acceleration, and an exhaust note very much akin to that of a Porsche GT3 RSR. It has logged just 199 miles from new, and save for minor weathering to the chrome in select areas, still presents as a new car.

Please note that this Manxter is titled in the State of California as a 1973 Volkswagen, and as such, is smog exempt.
