Description

1974 Alfa Romeo GTV 2000
s/n AR*3023964*
Red with Black Interior

Designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro while at Bertone, the GTV was a welcome favorite from its introduction, and remaining so through successful iterations through 1975. With its stunning Bertone-designed body, tidy greenhouse, and low but roomy profile, these perfectly proportioned cars received only minor exterior changes as they evolved. The biggest change occurred in 1969 with the elimination of the early “stepped” hood and the change of the nomenclature to GTV. Under the hood was another story all together. Over the years, the engine displacement grew which altered the GTV’s character. The innovative high-revving, carbureted 1570 cc DOHC four (1600) was succeeded by a 1779 cc four (1750) with a SPICA mechanical fuel injection system in the GTV of 1969, and finally the displacement increase to 1962cc (2000) via an increase in bore in 1971.

The charming but hunkered down front-engine, rear drive coupe offered seating for four adults and spirited performance. Although the design shared many mechanical parts with the former Giulietta, the new unibody or monocoque platform was very innovative and lightweight. Live rear axle, disc brakes in all corners, dual overhead cam, and 5-speed gearbox, all resulted in a very effective combination.

This later series GTV is a beautiful example of the 2000 model which was sold new in California in 1975. The car has been in a Northern California collection for several years where it underwent a very thoughtful restoration, with much of the work done in 2013. An in-house team performed the restoration, using outside specialists, when needed. The results are quite nice overall, creating a very handsome car with excellent driving traits and well-sorted mechanicals.

The paint is very nicely done with high gloss and smooth coverage throughout. Panel fit is very sound, exhibiting very good closure for doors, hood and trunk, and good gapping. The new door rubber is very fresh and spongy and thus requires a firm shut when closing the doors. From the cleanliness of the trim and window gaskets, it appears that all the glass was removed and new rubber installed, when the car was fully repainted. The same care and attention to detail prevails throughout the car as the trim, bumpers, lighting and lenses are all in very good to excellent condition. The car sits on recently installed Bridgestone Potenza tires with alloy rims showing no curb rash and excellent overall finish. The flush door handles are in very nice condition (brand new replacements), fitting smoothly to the doors. The car has great stance, hunkered down just slightly on all four corners with the wheels and tires properly tucked inside the beautiful wheel arches.

The interior was very nicely refinished as needed including high quality dash, headliner, carpets and seats. The fit and finish on the interior is of a very high quality, giving the car a handsome appearance once inside. The instruments are beautifully finished with excellent trim, color, details, and clear lenses. The steering wheel is also in excellent condition as are the surrounding switches, door handles and window cranks.

Mechanical work on the car includes rebuilt suspension, brakes, and various fuel lines as needed. Records for repairs included with the car show invoices for valve cover gaskets, flex coupling, fuel tank sender, fuel filter, lower ball joints, A arm bushings, tie rod ends, trail arm bushings, brake booster hose, brake booster servo check valve, rebuilt actuator, motor mounts, timing chain bushing, pilot bushing, crank seal, clutch assembly, and pinion seal. New exhaust, a rebuilt transmission, new clutch, and injector service along with general services as needed was performed on the car in order to get it to proper and reliable running order. Under the hood the car presents very nicely with excellent finishes and proper Alfa equipment as it left the factory. The trunk is nicely finished with black carpet and embroidered red Alfa Romeo script. The undercarriage is clean and dry with evidence of much recent work and very nicely finished suspension components. The finned aluminum oil pan is nicely maintained with no major chips. The floor pan, engine supports, and various structural components are in excellent condition.

With the recent work completed and the car settling in over the past few years, it is ready to enjoy. The engine starts easily, revs quickly and produces excellent power with no smoke evident. The brakes and clutch operate as they should. The gearbox is excellent both warm and cold, including reverse gear and is easily engaged at speed. Suspension is smooth under low speed cornering and quite nice on highways and in general driving conditions. Enjoyable driving and captivating design awaits in this nicely restored late series GTV 2000. The recent mechanical work, very tidy and pretty engine, along with the quality body and interior restoration, make this Alfa a very nice candidate for enjoyable driving and showing as desired.
