De Tomaso’s replacement for the attractive but incompletely resolved Mangusta was the Pantera. Maintaining the impressive ingredients that distinguished the Mangusta, including mid-mounted Ford V8, 5-speed ZF transaxle, and dramatic styling, the Pantera also added monocoque construction. The cars sold quite well, and were produced continuously from its 1971 introduction until the early 1990’s (though US importation ceased officially in 1975). Although the later cars were substantially changed, the early cars have a certain purity that has ensured that they remain attractive and collectible. Today, the De Tomaso Pantera represents outstanding value when compared to other European-America hybrids, such as the GT-40, and the Bizzarrini.

This particular example is a top-tier car, and has been subject of a comprehensive and well documented restoration by Hall Pantera. Indeed, it is the very last of the Pantera’s to have been restored by Hall, a recognized industry-leader in the De Tomaso community.

The restoration was completed by Hall Pantera in September of 2007, and at that time just 21,100 mile were indicated. An engine specification sheet from Precision Pro-Formance is included within the documentation, (see scanned documents).

Showing just 1,500 miles since restoration, the car presents beautifully today- above and below- with virtually no cosmetic detractions of any significance. The paintwork is done to very high standards in a beautiful shade evocative of the era when these cars were new. The retrofitted chrome bumpers greatly improve the styling, and the car sits on very sharp 17-inch Campy wheels with centers in their original design, which allow for a muscular stance appropriate for the car’s performance at speed.

The engine bay absolutely sparkles with a fresh and thorough mirror-finish presentation. The underside is equally nice, and representative of a comprehensively resorted example.

The interior, which is stated to be partially original, is also beautiful, and free from and significant cosmetic flaws.

Offered with an original owner’s manual and restoration documentation, this tastefully updated, chrome bumper Pantera will be the right choice for the discerning collector who is looking for the best of the best but does not want to wait through the tiring restoration process. Further, it is unlikely that the quality of work performed here could be duplicated today for the asking price.
