California Car Stored From 1979 to 2004. Less Than 3,000 Miles on Rebuilt Engine, Suspension and Brakes.
1974 Ferrari Dino 246 GTS
s/n 8504 engine no. 821101
Bianco Polo Park with Tan Interior
Named for Enzo Ferrari’s son, Alfredino, who died in 1956 at the age of 24 as the result of muscular dystrophy, the Dino was, fittingly, a ‘baby’ Ferrari that was dimensionally smaller and more nimble than any other street Ferrari. Its mid-placed engine was a Ferrari first for a street car, and the engine itself is a gem: a lovely quad cam V6 that reflected the lessons learned from producing V6s for Dino race cars like the 206 SP. The styling for the car was done by Pininfarina, and remains to many one of the most beautiful and exotic Ferraris of the period. Certainly the view from the driver’s seat over the two prominently curved fenders is one of the most evocative roadgoing driver’s seat views.
This particular car is a late production US market example, the 8th from last Dino built. Sold new by Griswold and Company in Berkeley, California, the car has covered approximately 41,500 miles from new and remains extraordinarily well-preserved and largely original. The car is an original power windows and air conditioned example that was in storage from 1979 to 2004, during which time the car had approximately 38,000 miles. Following its extended storage, the car has had over $40,000 in work to ensure that is now a superb running example. The work performed included suspension and brake rebuilds, full engine rebuild, carburetor rebuilds, distributor rebuild, water pump rebuild, AC rebuilt, alternator rebuild, and new clutch. Miscellaneous other detailing work was performed in the engine compartment as well, and the heater controls, door lock assemblies, cooling tubes were also rebuilt or replaced. Most recently in October 2012, the car fluid service as well. All work was performed by either Coppa Bella Motors or Gran Touring Classics, and is documented with invoices.
Cosmetically, the car is a very well-preserved original example. The paintwork appears to have been renewed at some point and is in generally good condition, although close inspection reveals a few areas of checking and the a few chips, such as on the door edges. There is no corrosion in evidence other than two small bubbles at the bottom of the left door. The panels are straight throughout and fit properly. The wheels are in excellent shape as are the glass and lights. The chrome appears to be original and is generally very good, although the finish on the rear bumpers is worn and each of the front bumpers has a hole in it from where the standard US market over-riders were previously attached.
The interior is original and well-preserved, with an excellent original “mouse fur” dash, which display much less fading than is typical for these cars. The leather is original and has some patina, but is largely intact other than some separating seams on the bottom of the driver’s seat. The instruments and controls are excellent throughout, being original and in great shape. The remaining upholstery is also excellent, with only one small hold in the right door panel. The steering wheel is in great shape, as are the carpets. The air conditioning blows cold.
The front compartment is similarly well-preserved and is correct throughout. The plastic liner tray is intact and in excellent shape. The trunk is also very correct and in fine shape, retaining the original carpeting. The engine is impressively clean and is detailed following the rebuild. The valves were adjusted in January 2012, less than 1000 miles ago.
This is an exceptional opportunity to acquire an extremely late production low-mileage Dino GTS that was equipped new with air conditioning has never left California from the day it was sold new. It has seen recent, extensive no-expense spared mechanical freshening, including 2500 miles since a complete engine rebuild. The car is absolutely on the button and runs and drives superbly.
