Description

1974 Trojan Formula One Racecar s/n T103-02 Period Correct Red and White Livery Trojan Cars were responsible for building the McLaren customer chassis for the non-works teams in the Can-Am and Formula 5000 series during the 1970s. Like the Team cars, these chassis enjoyed great success in the hands of the most capable drivers of the era. Trojan built a Formula one chassis with much design input from Ron Tauranac, mated it to the ever popular Ford DFV power plant, and entered Australian driver Tim Schenken in the 1974 Formula One season. While comparatively lightly budgeted, entering a team in the series which represented the absolute pinnacle of Motorsports was a natural evolution of Trojans involvement in professional Motorsports. Peter Agg, owner and manager of Trojan Cars, had experienced great success in a myriad of other Motorsports backgrounds, including managing the Suzuki team which carried Barry Sheens two his world championships in 1976 and 1977. Mr. Agg, still to this day, remains the owner of Trojan Cars which, along with his son Charley Agg, continues to play an active roll in historic racing in the Super Sports Cup and Interseries in Europe. The 1974 season was a tough one for the Trojan team. Difficulty acquiring a contract with the preferred tire supplier, coupled with limited funding, put a ceiling on the teams potential. The team entered 9 of the championship rounds, finishing 10th at in the Belgium Grand Prix, and 10th again at the Austrian Grand Prix. Perhaps the most notable success for the Trojan F1 cars has come in their historic era. This car enjoyed a victory and the 1999 CSRG Formula One Festival, and again at the Monterey Historics where it beat the later, more complex, and therefore less reliable Williams 008s. This proves that the simplistic and easy to drive nature of the non-ground effects, out board suspension cars, are actually the preferred F1 machine for vintage use. The ownership and history of this chassis is known from new. It was used as a T-car in the 1974 season and stored for several decades by Peter Agg before he commissioned the complete restoration in the late 1990s, on the premises, by Trojan Cars. The resulting car was one of quickest, and finest handling vintage Formula One cars available for vintage use. After racing this car in Historic Formula One events in California in 1999, Fantasy Junction sold this car in 2000 to Kevin Kelley of North Carolina. Mr. Kelley ran the car in four HSR events during his ownership. Fantasy Junction recently reacquired this car as part of a package from Mr. Kelly. One often overlooked aspect of Formula One cars is the size of the cockpit. The late 1970s and early 1980s car were built for miniature Europeans, and the modern American will be quickly humbled getting in, much less out of them. The earlier cars, and this chassis in particular, accommodate a fairly large body- both tall and wide. The engine has been completely rebuilt by Handy at Sasco Engineering, and is configured as a standard stroke 3.0L unit. The car looks to be in very good mechanical order, and the new owner should expect little more than a new set of tires and a comprehensive pre-race prep before his first weekend. The car is eligible and welcome in HMSA and General Racing events, HSR, CSRG, and the rapidly growing and prestigious HGP events which share venues with Grand-Am and IRL.
