Description

1975 Ferrari 308GT4
s/n 10200
Silver with Red Leather and Blue Carpet

Study the finest sports cars in recent history, and you will find it difficult to imagine that Ferrari once resisted mid-engine layouts for his cars. So hesitant was Enzo about mid-engine design that he insisted the first produced, the 246, be launched under a different brand name - the Dino. But gradually as competitors entered the market, the mid-engine ideal began to make an impact. With the introduction of the V8 engine, the final piece of the puzzle fell into place, triggering what would become decades of mid-engine Ferraris, still in production today.

Unlike previous Pininfarina designs before it, the newly launched GT4 was linear and angular. The fresh Bertone architecture featured a sizable trunk, room behind the front seats for luggage and small passengers, and reasonable access to the transverse mounted dual overhead cam V8 engine. Seating position was pushed forward, creating fantastic visibility and superb pedal position. The 5-speed synchromesh transaxle allowed for smooth shifts, bringing all of 240hp (in US trim) to the drive wheels, returning excellent performance for the period. In 1977, Ferrari dropped the Dino name entirely, branding all subsequent GT4 models as Ferraris.

This particular Ferrari 308GT4 was manufactured by Ferrari in February 1975 and sold under the Dino brand. Delivered in stunning silver metallic with red interior and blue carpeting, this Dino reflects wonderful Italian design with excellent colors and distinct style. The previous owner had a major service performed on the car and also rebuilt the suspension and brakes. The wheels have been repainted in the proper factory color and have been shod with period correct Michelins. Ferrari expert Patrick Ottis recently rebuilt the carburetors and water pump (records on hand). While the car has been properly serviced and maintained, it has been updated with a few details including a stainless steel exhaust system.

Today the car presents in very good overall condition with a finish that shows good gloss and uniform coverage throughout what appears to be the original and unmolested body. The body panels show good fit overall with no major flaws, opening easily and closing without issues. The hood, headlight doors and fit of the front and rear bumpers are very nicely done with excellent panel gaps. The doors and deck lids are also nicely fitting to the body indicating that the car has been properly cared for throughout its life. The front and rear bumpers are in very good shape with no major damage with correct satin black finish. The glass appears to be original to the car with no major scratches or chips of note, although two small scratches are on the inside of the windshield. The glass lighting and plastic lenses are in very good condition. Unlike so many other cars, the front and rear Dino emblems and script have not been replaced with incorrect Ferrari emblems. These correct emblems remain in very nice condition. Although the paint is glossy, there are light road chips along the front or the car, and paint blemishes primarily on the roof, but also along the sail panels and various other areas. There are a few small chips lightly dotting the rocker panels. The side glass trim remains in very nice condition, free from major scratches or dings. The recently repainted wheels are in good condition with only minor curb marks on the outside edge of one rim. The side mirrors, and door handles have very nice chrome finishes, accenting touches to the silver and black exterior theme.

The interior is in very good condition overall with nicely upholstered red leather seats featuring good bolsters and support. The blue carpet is in good condition and matches the nice feel of the interior overall. The black dashboard and silver accented instrumentation are in good to very good condition showing no major issues while displaying a cohesive original appearance. While not fresh, the feel of the interior is very satisfying for the enthusiast to use and show with delight. The center console is covered in a matching red material housing the switchgear, a modern radio, and A/C controls. The A/C unit has been removed from the engine with the parts having been retained and included with the sale. The trunk (showing what appears to be original carpet) has only light wear. The spare tire compartment is clean and tidy, in good overall condition, appearing unrestored, yet properly preserved.

Under the hood, the car presents a very nice engine and clean engine compartment, featuring original components, finishes, and attention to details as needed. Wiring, fittings, and lines all appear to have been replaced with correct style and specification pieces. The underside of the car is clean, though not detailed, and the various finned castings reveal a car that has been cared for, yet used as intended.

The car starts easily, warm or cold, and settles into a smooth idle. Blipping the throttle delivers satisfying V8 sounds with a crisp and throaty snap. Driving this GT4, the smooth clutch takes up easily and the gearbox shifts easily in harmony with excellent throttle response and responsive steering. The engine has been properly tuned, running at correct temperatures, and showing no exhaust smoke. On the road and at speed, the driver position and forward stance delivers a Formula One-like experience. No surprise given the great Niki Lauda, himself a Ferrari racing champion, had a hand in developing the GT4 suspension geometry for Ferrari.

The car comes with an original Dino 308GT4 owner’s manual (North American Version), a complete tool kit in very good condition, jack bag and jack with jacking tools, and the (boxed when removed) air conditioning unit, and assorted A/C parts.

This handsome Ferrari 308GT4 is ready for ongoing enjoyment and thrilling drives. One of Ferraris earliest mid-engine designs, the performance V8 and 5-speed transaxle deliver excellent balance and response. Offered in stunning colors, this car is particularly suited to enthusiasts who enjoy driving their cars with passion - engaging the pure and enchanting Italian sounds as only a vintage Ferrari can deliver.
