Description

1976 Bristol 411 Mk. V Sunroof Coupe s/n 7763575 Dark Red with Biscuit Interior Though not widely known in the United States, Bristol is a legend among those who appreciate their combination of build quality, exclusivity, reliability, and performance. Before building cars, Bristol also built airplanes, many of which served the United Kingdom well during the Second World War. Since the war, they have built a reputation for producing hand-made automobiles that are unique and distinguished but also elegant and understated. They are luxurious and competent road cars that are quick, but also effortless to drive. Powered by large displacement Chrysler V8`s since the early 1960`s, Bristols are also robust and reliable. Bristol has never had a dealer network and all cars are sold through the factory showroom in London, and of course all cars are right hand drive. They were meant for the gentleman, the same sort of person who would buy a Bentley, but who wanted something just a bit more exclusive. The 411 was introduced in 1969 and was produced in five series. Like many Bristols, the 411 has a hand-formed aluminum body and a pair of access panels in front of the doors. The right one houses the battery and brake servo, and the left one the spare tire. This particular example is a fifth series car, which cost a formidable 13,000 pounds in 1976. That princely sum bought a 6.9 litre engine, Torqueflite automatic transmission, as well as optional sunroof and air conditioning. This car was imported from the United Kingdom in the last ten years or so and includes a great deal of service records, MOT`s etc from the late 1980`s into the mid 1990`s, as well a few more recent documents, including a $3500 service bill less than 100 miles ago for a major service. This included, new brake servo, thermostat, carburetor adjustment, spark plugs, wires, rotor, alternator, front shock absorbers, and the rectification of a few leaks. The exterior of this car, while presentable, does have a few needs. There are several chips about the body, but no significant dents, other than a small one on the left front fender. Since the bodywork is aluminum, there is minimal corrosion, although there is some at the peaks of the front wheelarches where the steel frame joins with the aluminum panels. The chrome is showing some age in the form of moderate hazing and pitting. The optional alloy wheels are excellent. Cosmetically, this car could be enjoyed as is, or would also benefit from some restorative work. The interior has moderate patina. The original leather has no tears or holes and remains supple, but there is creasing and dirt. The carpets are excellent throughout, and the wood is generally quite presentable. There are a few selected areas of cracking to the wood. The steering wheel and gauges are excellent, while the headliner shows some minor sagging and discoloration. The driving position is extremely relaxed but also commanding, and it is very easy to imagine a captain of industry or aristocrat piloting this imposing car past swarms of Minis and Morrises. The engine compartment and trunk are tidy and unrestored. The engine compartment is reasonably clean and shows signs of recent maintenance. The underside is unrestored but is solid and free from corrosion. There is a stainless steel exhaust system fitted. This is a very unusual opportunity to acquire one of these exclusive automobiles. Representing a truly hand-built and old world `gentleman`s express`, this Bristol 411 is sure to appeal to the discerning buyer looking for something different.
