Desirable Early Production Carbureted GTS. European Bumpers and 16" Wheels
1978 Ferrari 308 GTS
s/n 26017
Rosso Corsa with Tan Interior
Introduced in 1975 at the Paris Auto Salon, Pininfarina’s take on the 308 is a more curvaceous and exotic looking car than Bertone’s 308 GT4. Its shapely Pininfarina styling still draws compliments today, and the cars are the ideal entry-level Ferrari. As such, they have always been and always will be a popular way to enjoy the incomparable Ferrari experience.
This particular example is equipped with the attractive European bumpers, as well as 16” wheels from a later 308. It has been in California for many years and comes with service records back to 1994, during which time the car was under the care of Patrick Ottis. In the early 1990’s, the car was restored by Ken McMurphy’s AutoEuropa, which has to its credit victories at Pebble Beach, including Best of Show.
Cosmetically, the car makes a strong impression overall, but close inspection reveals a few flaws. The paintwork was completed to very high standards some years ago and remains presentable, though the front spoiler does have some chipping from road use. There is light road rash on the remaining frontal areas of the car. The doors also have some non-structural bubbling in their lower areas, all below the character line. It is confined to the doors and there is no other body corrosion in evidence. The glass and trim are both excellent, and the car has been upgraded with Hella H4 headlamps. The wheels are in nice shape though the rear ones have some curb rash.
The interior was redone as well, to standards that are markedly better than when the car was new. The leather was redone and is very nice, with only some wear on the driver’s bolster. The carpets were redone to superb standards and fit extremely well, and the dash and instruments are excellent, with a crispness that is unusual in these cars .
The front compartment is very tidy, as is the trunk. The zippered cover is in excellent order and the zipper works properly. The engine compartment is extremely clean and has been well-detailed. It is far above the level of most drivers and is extremely tidy.
This is a great opportunity to acquire a nicely equipped open 308. Presented in quintessential Ferrari colors, this example comes with service records back to 1994, and original owner’s manual. The car has not been used much lately and therefore should receive a light service before being driven extensively. As a carbureted example, this car is not likely to pass California’s strict smog test and we therefore offer this car as a 49-state example.
