General Overview
The all-new Pininfarina designed Ferrari 308 debuted at the 1975 Paris Auto Show. Pininfarina designer Leonardo Fioravanti, credited with the design of the Daytona, the Dino, and Berlinetta Boxer captured a crisp and fresh profile with the 308. As a replacement for the 246, the 308 became an important market maker for Ferrari. The styling was dramatic and balanced with just the right combination of curvaceous forms and angular lines. Mechanically, the 308 featured the same layout of the GT4 with a transverse quad-cam V8, initially with carburetion and, by 1980, offered with Bosch K-Jetronic fuel-injection. Although the first series was limited to a fixed roof configuration, the GTS arrived in 1977, featuring a removable satin black roof panel, which could be stowed in a vinyl cover behind the seats when not in use. Through a decade of production iterations, the 308 introduced Ferrari to a new generation of buyers while affirming the validity of mid-engine design, a platform which continues in modern Ferrari production today. The 308 GTB Registry in conjunction with the Ferrari Owners Club website indicates that 1,743 308 GTSi models were built between 1980-1983.
History and Build Details
This Ferrari was assembled at the factory in February 1982 and delivered to Pioneer Porsche Audi Ferrari, La Mesa, CA. According to the owner’s manual accompanying the car, it was purchased by the first owner on August 13, 1983. The purchasing owner is listed in the owner’s manual as Mattco Forge, Inc. a metal forging company located in Paramount, CA. The current owner purchased the car in 2013 from a California dealership who stated the car had remained under singular ownership since new. According to the previous selling dealer, the car had been regularly serviced including a belt service performed in preparation for sale. In 2013 the odometer indicated 27,000 miles which the selling dealer stated were original. Handwritten records of accumulated miles recorded by the current owner from 2014-2023 indicate mileage from 28,060 – 29,103 covering just over 1,000 miles over the past ten years of current ownership. The current owner has stored the car indoors, being careful to preserve the low miles and original condition, starting the car periodically and taking short drives to ensure all systems were operational. In 2018 the left side rear caliper was repaired, brakes bled, a new EGR valve installed, and the oil changed. A new battery was installed in November 2019 and a new radio fuse installed in 2023.
Condition Overview
Today this nicely preserved 308 GTSi presents in handsome white trimmed with black leather interior and removable roof. Assembled in 1982, it is one of just 1,743 produced before the 308 Quattrovalvole arrived later that year. The white paint is glossy and smooth showing no major dings, or blemishes, with some typical stone chips at the front of the car. The finish is mostly original, returning single digit paint meter readings using a digital paint meter. The front air dam has been resprayed under the front bumper with some overspray visible on the underside front area. All glass appears beautifully preserved with no major marks or cracks bearing the correct original etched logos. The finish of all satin black trim pieces has been properly preserved including the black louvered sections on the engine lid and vented sail panels.
Body panel fit throughout is very nice with doors opening and closing easily and crisp latching. The hood and deck lid open and close with ease. All opening contact surfaces retain very nice rubber surrounds showing only minor material compression and little to no dryness or cracking. Lenses and emblems are in excellent condition, also appearing original to the car. The 15” wheels are nicely maintained with no major curb rash and nice silver sheen wearing correctly sized Michelin Radial X tires.
Inside the cabin, the contrasting black interior conveys a simple, elegant reflection of performance from this era. The well-maintained interior has been properly preserved, most of which is original to the car. The driver’s seat and passenger headrest appear to have been reupholstered prior to current ownership using high quality black leather. The bright instrument dial faces have good color contrast, and the 5-speed manual shifter, switches, and other dashboard elements are in excellent condition. The dash and padding, steering wheel, and cabin vents are all preserved and remain in very nice original condition, including the optional air conditioning controls which function properly and blows cold air when in use. A modern Kenwood stereo unit is installed in the correct factory location. The textured black roof is easily stowed behind the seats in the factory original black cover. Fit remains tight when installed with no significant flaws to the rubber seals and easy to use latches.
The fuel-injected V8 engine is original to the car and remains preserved and authentic to the indicated miles. Finishes remain factory specified, slightly dulled by modest use. The rear zipper compartment zips shut, creating a taut blanket with no sagging across the closure as is often found in higher mile examples. The front storage area features a full-size Michelin spare tire with matching rim. The surrounding molded black cargo tub is in excellent original condition. The undercarriage has not been detailed but reveals finishes validating the 29,000 miles this car has covered since new.
The car starts easily without hesitation, settling into an even idle. Braking and shifting are smooth and effortless – a hallmark of a well-maintained car while progressive acceleration is delightful especially when engaging the manual transmission in more spirited driving. The reliable fuel-injection allows cold and warm starts and none of the fussiness often found in earlier carbureted cars. For enjoyable touring or cruising mild mountain roads, the GTSi offers one of the most pleasurable and balanced driving experiences of this era.
