General Overview

Produced from 1976-1989 the E24 was designed by Paul Bracq and configured solely as a two-door coupe. The 633 CSi was built using the 3.2L M30 engine and 5-speed Getrag manual (upgraded from 4-speed in 1981) or ZF automatic transmission available as an option. Outfitted with leather interior, numerous comfort features, and a host of performance enhancements as the model year continued through the 1980s, these 6-series cars are today considered among the best examples of grand touring cars built. The build quality, exceptional road manners and combined luxury offered tremendous value for discerning buyers. But it wasn’t just luxury, the 633 CSi offered performance surpassing sports cars of the period in acceleration, cornering, and braking. These amazing grand touring cars continue to lure collectors and enthusiasts today for the same reasons when new. Astute collectors seeking the best examples are rapidly acquiring the best examples of well-preserved low-mile cars, particularly those equipped with 5-speed manual transmissions.

History of This Car

This car was purchased by the original and only owner brand new from the BMW dealership in Palo Alto, CA on May 18, 1984. The car was delivered with a sunroof, 5-speed manual transmission, and power seats. Over the past 38 years, this 633 CSi has remained in Northern California under single ownership and professional care. Consecutive miles have accrued at a leisurely pace accounting for the extraordinary preservation-grade condition exhibited in virtually every detailed corner of this car. Service invoices leading up to the 9,978 miles indicated today begin in 1985 from Stanford BMW where a 1,200-mile service was performed with 700 miles indicated. Records continue in 1989 with D&M Motors at 3,738 miles with a fuel-injection adjustment, smog check, and new O2 sensor. Invoices for various small parts continue through the 1990s and in 1999 with 5,715 miles indicated, DM Motors replaced the O-ring and thermostat, hood shock, brake master cylinder, fresh brake fluid, and a smog check. Returning to DM Motors in 2001, the car was serviced including a power steering gear seal replacement and reseal with 6,036 miles. Other services in 2001 include a new instrument cluster board replacing the coil for the MPG gauge, engine oil added, and a new door lock control unit as well as a new set of Michelin MXV4 205/70 H14 tires which remain on the car today. In 2003, with 6,788 miles indicated, Palo Alto Bimmer replaced the rear muffler. In 2011, a new battery was purchased for the car along with an oil filter from Peter Pan BMW.

Condition Overview

Today this 633 CSi presents as one of the most stunning, original, and unrestored examples in existence.
The original Alpine White paint has been beautifully preserved with every exterior body panel showing exceptional gloss, fluid reflections, and displaying all the characteristics of original paint including excellent door jambs, underside hood color, firewall finish, and underside trunk finish including latches, clasps, and hardware details. Digital paint meter readings are consistent with single digit readings when sampled on all metal body panels.

The hood, doors, trunk, and sunroof all function with precision closure, smooth latch releases, and excellent panel fit. The original wheels retain their factory finish with Michelin tires mounted on all four corners. All lights, lenses, glass, and emblems are in exceptional original condition. All glass panels are marked with the original factory branding. All mechanical features, interior details, and equipment function as new including the power seats, headrests, and power sunroof. Though miles have been limited by the sole original owner, whenever needed the owner sought out OEM parts only, being very careful to replace only what was needed with the services of qualified BMW experts. When not in use, the car has remained indoors, protected from any adverse climate conditions in order to preserve and maintain the exceptional original features of this flagship example.

The interior of the car is equally superlative with supple black leather, excellent power adjustable front seats, sound bolster structure on all seating surfaces, smooth leather material, excellent seat stitching, a pristine dashboard, immaculate center console, and exceptional headliner and sunroof panel. Even the original carpet is preservation grade throughout. Every light, indicator, system feature, and mechanical item functions as new. The AC blows cold, the radio functions properly, the power sunroof opens and closes smoothly, all windows function up and down with smooth operation, and all switches function and appear essentially in as-new condition. The trunk is finished with an equal level of detail including an original tool kit and pristine case, correct spare tire, and tire tools.

Under the hood, the original engine displays correct factory finishes, untouched in many areas, beautiful underside hood finishes, firewall finishes, factory markings, stickers, and correct hoses, lines, and hardware throughout. Impressive visually, the car starts instantly and displays precision operation when driven, though demonstration miles have been limited to preserve the car with the same respect and restraint shown by the original and singular owner. The undercarriage displays further levels of driving restraint and cleanliness found only on unrestored cars still displaying original factory finishes. There is no evidence of driving in adverse weather conditions. Without exception, this BMW could enter any competitive BMW or multiple marque concours and emerge at the top of the class representing preservation examples or competing against professionally restored cars.

And while the car itself represents a premium level of presentation; the mechanical condition has been afforded the same passionate care given to the cosmetic presentation. Every aspect of the car delivers on the promises of the original build, with exceptional driving, braking, and shifting operations just as one might have experienced when delivered new in 1984.

This is truly one of the very best if not the best unrestored example of the North American flagship BMW 633 CSi available today. With documented provenance, superlative condition, and unbelievably low miles, this definitive example is worthy of the finest collections in the world.
