Description

1984 Ferrari 512 BBi `Berlinetta Boxer`
VIN: ZFFJA09B000050743
Racing Red with Tan Leather

The Boxer line represented a remarkable departure for Ferrari. It was the successor to the comparatively conventional Daytona, and Ferrari's first mid-engined flagship. Those who had witnessed Lamborghini`s stunning Miura had been anxiously awaiting Ferrari`s response, and the Boxer did not disappoint. Featuring a horizontally opposed twelve-cylinder motor longitudinally mounted inline with the transmission, it had a low center of gravity placed near the center of mass. Clothed in suitably rakish bodywork by Pininfarina, the Boxer was a stunner. The 512 BBi represents the ultimate development of the Boxer line and was distinguished from the 512 BB and 365 models that preceded it by the introduction of fuel injection. Today, the Boxer remains a dramatic and exciting car that is masculine without being too demanding to drive.

This example was brought into the US in 1985 and has been extremely well-maintained. It was fully federalized by Amerispec and comes with the related paperwork. It underwent a full engine-out service at in May of 2008, including full 30K service with belts. The hoses, fluids (brake, clutch, gearbox, and motor oil), seals, spark plugs, and clutch (and all associated bearings) were also renewed at that time, and the valves and cam timing were also adjusted. The total cost was $11,932.11. In 2006, the catalytic converters were replaced as well, along with the clutch. In the intervening period, much regular maintenance has been carried out, and there are receipts back to the early 1990`s. The original federalization documents from 1985 are also included with the car. The car is now absolutely ready to enjoy and performs extremely well. Even today, the performance remains eye-opening, much more so than the Testarossas that succeeded the BBi, which were heavier and slower.

Cosmetically, the car is extremely nice. The paintwork is excellent in quality and condition, with only the very slightest of wear and a small scratch and nick on the nose. The underside of the front chin spoiler and associated under trays are nearly flawless a remarkable and unusual feat for a Boxer. All lenses are excellent, and the car is fitted with four flat-faced Cibi headlights in new condition, and a pair of Cibi fog lamps. The car is also fitted with the more attractive triple-eared knock-offs on Cromodora alloys wearing nearly new Michelin TRX tires. As a federalized car, this particular example is equipped with side markers, which, thankfully, have been very subtly integrated. The glass is generally good, with only minor wear to the windscreen, and all trim is intact and very good to excellent.

The interior is also very nice. Aside from some shrinkage to the dashboard leather, the interior is free from flaws that detract from the visual impact. The leather on the door panels, console, steering wheel, visors, and headliner is excellent. The gauges appear as new, and the seats show only minor wear. The carpets show no significant flaws and a set of over mats emblazoned by red `Cavallini Rampante` are fitted. An Alpine CD player from the mid 1990`s has also been fitted, along with a set of JBL components. The air conditioning system has been recently serviced and blows cold.

The motor compartment is correct, intact, and clean, but not detailed for show. The underside is in similar condition. The front compartment excellent with no major flaws, and reveals a correct spare tire, manual pack, tools, as well as a fitted Ferrari car cover. Close examination of the frame components reveals a uniform finish and seems to indicate that the car has no accident history.

While federalized, this car is unlikely to make it through California`s extremely tough new smog test. Therefore, we are offering this as a 49-state car. Residents of one of those 49 states can expect this to be a marvelous example of this important Ferrari road car. Performance and the general driving experience are outstanding, as is condition. When considered in light of the meteoric increases in Daytona values, the BBi is a comparative bargain, certainly it is not half the car that a Daytona is, and as Ferrari`s first mid engined flagship, it will always be an important car.
