1986 Alfa Romeo GTV6
s/n ZARAA6693G1007593
Dark red with Tan Leather

Alfa Romeo has long been associated with building some of the most exciting race and road cars. Their devotion to the sporting enthusiast is evident in every car they have assembled. Recent years have proven so to collectors as several of the finest Alfa Romeos have become multi-million dollar classics. By the 1980’s Alfa Romeo was evolving into a highly specialized and technically sophisticated car builder. Nowhere is that more notable that in the Italdesign GTV6 model.

By 1975 Alfa Romeo was selling roughly 5,000 cars annually in the United States when the four-door Alfetta arrived. The Alfetta GT, a taught and angular design from Giorgetto Giugiaro, featured the DOHC four, fed by SPICA mechanical fuel injection. Certainly potent, but Alfa had far more to come. An all-new 2.5-liter hemi-head V-6 designed by Filippo Surace, was finally ready for production use. It would be the first of its kind for Alfa and very much recognized as essentially the last Alfa Romeo engineering effort before the struggling company would be absorbed as a Fiat brand.

GTV6 models imported into the US featured the 2,492cc (152.3-cu.in.) 60-degree OHC V-6. The engine alone is a technically sophisticated delight due to its lightweight aluminum block and cylinder heads which deliver 160hp @ 5,600 RPM and 157-lbs.ft. @ 4,000 RPM. The Bosch L-Jetronic fuel injection (superior in many ways to the previous SPICA units) instantly feeds all this power and torque through a five-speed rear mounted manual transaxle. This feature, coupled with inboard rear disc brakes result in a near 50/50 weight distribution.

The car featured here has to be regarded as one of the finest GTV6 models in existence. Sold new by European Auto Imports, Santa Clara in November 1984, the car remained in Santa Clara with the new owner who enjoyed the factory leather interior, sunroof, and air conditioning for fifteen years. The owner retained the car until 2001, maintaining it with great care, preserving the original window sticker, filing records of service, and collecting copious documentation totaling over 4 pounds. Mechanical work included general servicing, a rebuilt transmission, new clutch, some suspension work, and wheel bearings, to name a few. Cosmetically, a complete all-new leather interior including headliner, carpets, and assorted trim were also installed. The second (and current) owner, an SF based classic sports car collector and enthusiast, elected to repaint the car in the original factory color. The car was properly prepared including all new window and door rubber and a beautiful coat of Alfa dark red was professionally applied. New tires were also installed, additional service performed and light use ensued over the next 15 years of his ownership. The resultant care and restoration make this car visually stunning. In its current condition, it is difficult to imagine a better GTV6.

The paint remains very nice throughout with excellent gloss throughout and various black trim showing consistent satin luster. All closures function as expected with excellent factory seams and alignment. All glass, lighting, and lenses are in excellent condition as are the various recently replaced rubber glass trim and door rubber as previously noted when the car was repainted. The interior is beautifully finished with all leather surfaces remaining taut and supple. The black trim, dashboard, and various 1980’s era pieces all remain in fine condition, unlike even nicely preserved cars of this era where warping and cracking dominate. Overall the interior shows very well including the rear hatch area, displaying the proper suspended package shelf and correct factory linings, both in the hatch area and directly under the hood.

The engine compartment is very nicely detailed showing correct components as it originally left the factory. The various hoses, composite intake plenums, air box and assorted components are in very good condition, revealing none of the dryness, cracking, or heat warping often seen in these components. The cast metal components are beautifully preserved with even patina from general use, showing their original luster, while boasting the twin cam, fuel injected prowess this historic engine presents. The engine bay further reflects the care and proper service this car has seen all its life. The undercarriage is dry, tidy, and appears original with no compromise to the underside structure or components. The finned aluminum oil pan shows no visible chips or breakage to the unique casting.

The car starts and runs as one might expect, under smooth idle and the clutch and shifter are easily engaged. The biggest surprise, even to the most familiar enthusiasts, is the driving experience. Vast open glass, perfect seating position, and superb weight distribution result in a driving experience that delights even the most learned drivers of higher priced exotics. The GTV6 simply delivers as a wonderful performance package, instilling even marginally skilled drivers with confidence and poise on mountainous roads.

This exceptional car comes with the factory spare tire, tools, and jack, owner’s manual and various delivery literature. Included in the sale is a well-prepared notebook featuring scores of service documents, the original window sticker, and multiple receipts for repair work over the past decades.

The Alfa Romeo GTV6 delivers spirited Italian performance through its powerful V6, rear mounted five speed transaxle, and astonishingly well-balanced chassis and suspension. Rarely does one find such a properly maintained and serviced California delivery vehicle optioned with sunroof and A/C in original stunning colors. Long regarded as the last of the true Alfa Romeos before Fiat control, this beautiful example should satisfy the most discerning GTV6 buyer and welcome astute collectors as the increasing popularity of this model continues to grow.
