Description

1987 Bentley Continental
VIN SCBZD02A7HCX21060
Tudor Red with Parchment Leather and Red Piping

The modern descendent of the legendary Continental and Corniche, this Bentley represents the best and last of the venerable Corniche line. Originally badged as a Bentley Corniche and little different from the Rolls-Royce version, the car was renamed the Continental for 1984, as part of the effort to differentiate the two brands. This helped to contribute to the Bentley renaissance of the 80s and 90s that has wasso successful. The later models were updated to reflect technological advances, and the 1987-88 series cars were updated with improved air conditioning, Bosch fuel-injection, Bosch ABS, alloy wheels, and more robust cooling system.

This particular car was ordered in Tudor red with parchment leather interior with contrasting red piping and carpets. A copy of the car’s entire Rolls-Royce Motors file is included, which has the build sheets, certificate of origin, each warranty claim, specification sheet, dealer order sheet, delivery note, pre-delivery inspection, and many other documents. The factory options included top roll, instrument roll, under dash trim and radio surround trimmed in parchment, lambswool carpets, and cocktail requisites to both doors.

The car was collected at Crewe in England on 27 June 1987 and sailed to the port of Lyndenhurst, New Jersey aboard the Atlantic Cartier. It was delivered to its original owner on 14 July 1987, sold new at FC Kerbeck in New Jersey. The first owner kept the car for less than a year, and it was sold to its second owner of Glenmoore, Pennsylvania on 4 May 1988 with 6067 miles on the odometer. The early invoices up to 1990 are included with the car, including the dealer submitted warranty claim submission documents to Rolls Royce Motors. The car’s current owner purchased it in Long Island, New York in 2008 and has used the car minimally since. The car currently shows just under 48,000 miles and received a major service less than 1000 miles ago. The car also recently received a new battery and starter relay. A binder containing a copy of the car’s Rolls-Royce Motors file as well as service invoices since 2008 is included with the car, as is the owner’s manual.

Cosmetically, the car is in excellent condition overall. The car was repainted to very good standards and makes a strong impression. It has excellent shine although close inspection reveals some surface blemishes and a few small chips, mostly limited to the front of the car and the edge of the driver’s door edge. The body is extremely straight with excellent panel fit and operation. The brightwork is generally very good, with a few superficial scratches and swirls but no pitting of significance. The wheels are excellent, as are the lights and glass.

The interior is excellent. The leather is nearly unmarked and the woodwork has been refinished to beautiful standards aside from the switch plates for the rear passengers which are in good condition. The carpets are excellent, including the lambswool over mats. The dashboard has very minor shrinkage on top. The instruments, switches, and controls are in very good condition.

The trunk is in very good condition and is trimmed to match the interior with red carpet and parchment binding. The engine compartment is remarkably clean for a car of this mileage. The finishes on the fittings and hoses look nearly new, and aside from some dust, the engine compartment is extremely tidy and shows minimal aging.

The car runs and drives very well. The engine starts easily, runs well, and accelerates the car effortlessly. The transmission shifts with remarkable smoothness and the brakes grab authoritatively. The roadholding is impressively good and there is a smoothness and effortlessness to the driving experience that perfectly embodies the refined traditional Rolls-Royce/Bentley experience. The car drives smaller than one would expect based on its size.

This is a very rare opportunity to acquire a very limited production Continental in excellent shape. It makes a strong cosmetic impression and is well-documented with extensive original information showing its unique specification and early history. In recent years, it has been properly maintained and used minimally and is complete with several years of sevice records, copy of the factory file on the car including build sheets, owner’s manual, and tools.
