Rosso Corsa with Tan Leather

The all-new Pininfarina designed Ferrari 308 debuted to an excited sports car public at the 1975 Paris Auto Show. It’s an understatement to say these were very challenging times in the auto industry, so one can imagine the delight at an all new sports car given the vastly detuned, rubber bumpered, ungainly vehicles proliferating the automotive world. Thankfully Ferrari was offering a refreshing option. Pininfarina designer Leonardo Fioravanti, having already designed many of Ferrari's most celebrated cars including the Daytona, the Dino, and Berlinetta Boxer captured a taut new energy with the 308. Replacing the 246, this Ferrari arrived as a new market maker. The 308 was dramatic and beautiful, quickly becoming a feature of television shows and movies, while shaping public opinion about what a sports car should look and feel like. Although the initial design was limited to a fixed roof configuration, the GTS arrived in 1977, featuring a removable satin black roof panel, which could be stowed in a vinyl cover behind the seats when not in use.

After more than a decade, the 328 GTB and GTS (Gran Turismo Spider) replaced the 308. While mechanically still based on the 308 GTB and GTS, engine displacement increased to 3.2 L (3185 cc) improving power and torque output. The 328 is considered by some Ferrari enthusiasts to be one of the most reliable and enjoyable Ferraris, due in part to most engine maintenance and service made possible without lowering the engine from the vehicle.

This beautifully prepared Ferrari 328 GTS has been lovingly cared for since it was ordered new in 1987 and delivered to San Diego, CA where it has remained all its life, under the care of just three dedicated owners. A March 15, 2017 CARFAX shows no accident/damage reported, and 30 detailed entries verifying the current miles on the odometer. Most recently, in September of 2014, Chris Dugan of Cavallo Motorsports in Oceanside, CA performed a complete engine and gearbox rebuild, documented by a detailed photo essay which accompanies the car.

The first impression one has when viewing this car is the amazing condition exhibited in all aspects. The paint is glossy throughout with excellent luster and smooth finish. The front fascia and rocker panels remain beautifully smooth accented by stunning emblems and script. Black trim, lenses, and various exterior accessories are all in near-perfect condition. Of particular note are the original factory wheels and essentially new tires. Commonly scuffed, dinged, or incorrectly weighted when serviced improperly, all wheels remain factory fresh and beautifully finished. The exterior shows attention to detail surprising even the most finicky enthusiast.

The theme of excellence continues when viewing the interior. Beautifully maintained since new, the tan leather has been professionally dyed in the original color. The seating surfaces remain attractive and taut, showing only minor use. The center console, all controls, and all black switches and knobs sit flush to the leather surface, with no puckering, wear or dirt marks of significance. Fit is excellent for all leather panels and the carpeting remains in very nice condition. The dashboard and instruments are beautifully maintained, featuring a dashpad in excellent condition (save for minor deterioration of the left side blank off plate), fronted by a very nicely maintained steering wheel. All instruments (including the clock, which keeps time) continue to function as new. The AC blows ice-cold, electric windows raise and lower properly, defroster, wipers, heater, horn, radio, and all instruments perform as expected when tested, both at idle and while the car is in use.

The engine compartment is nicely detailed and has been properly tended to during the engine installation after complete rebuild. Proper hoses and lines were used during the rebuild and install, making a very nice factory-faithful engine compartment. All cast finishes retain very nice surface luster, while all rubber and plastic components were cared for and replaced as needed. Under the hood, the spare tire and inner liner appear factory original with excellent fit and finish. The undercarriage remains original, showing no signs of damage, abuse, or incorrect repairs or modifications. It would be extremely difficult to find a more well-preserved and maintained 328 GTS than the fine example featured here.

The car starts easily and warms up smoothly without hesitation, owing to the recent engine rebuild. All mechanical systems were tested and sorted after both the engine and gearbox were rebuilt, to ensure everything was properly run-in after the services. At idle or when revved, there is excellent oil pressure and no smoke whatsoever. The gearbox is excellent throughout even when cold, offering smooth operation and easy shifting, in harmony with the properly operating clutch. Once underway, the suspension delivers a smooth and proper ride with braking being very nice and of course mid-engine cornering simply delightful.

This stunning 328 GTS is accompanied by an original factory tool kit and pouch (appearing as new), as well as a photo essay depicting the engine rebuilt work.

It would be very difficult if not impossible to find a more honest and correct Ferrari 328 GTS that has been fully serviced and so faithfully cared for since new. This fine car is ready for driving enjoyment while remaining highly capable of arriving at any regional or national concourse field, competing handsomely against all contenders, and arriving home with the owner broadly grinning from ear to ear.
