Introduced at the prestigious Paris Auto Show in 1984, the Pininfarina designed Ferrari Testarossa stunned the world with unprecedented styling, remarkable performance, and technical innovations. Designer and trained aerodynamicist Leonardo Fioravanti, already credited with many modern Ferrari designs, set the stage for a dramatic departure from the aging Boxer. Dealing directly with the previous cooling challenges and cabin heat in the 512 Boxer, the Testarossa design team placed radiators on each side of the car, adding a full 12” of additional width while also increasing the wheelbase of the former Boxer platform. Of course, the added room allowed for ample trunk and passenger space, but the most striking design feature was the bold use of the enormous side openings, accented by five horizontal strakes, which visually diffused the vast intake chambers. Ferrari purists and journalists feverishly opined over the avant-garde design, all of which was immediately quieted by surprising performance statistics and ultimately record-breaking sales.
Power for the new design came from a new Ferrari four valve horizontally opposed twelve-cylinder engine capable of delivering 390hp. Quick and capable at high speeds, the Testarossa was properly appointed inside with leather surfacing on the rear shelf, headliner, and visors in addition to the traditional leather seats and console. The sizable trunk, comfortable seating position, and ease of controls, made it an ideal car for comfortable long distance high-speed drives. Today, Testarossa owners are known for frequently using their cars, several examples of which have logged over 100k miles and a few now in excess of 200k. Low mile examples are becoming harder and harder to find, in part due to their drivability and ease of use, but also for the simple fact that they remain as visually arresting and in demand, just as they were when new.
This Testarossa is a desirable early production car with center lock wheels, constructed in April 1987, and delivered to the first owner in Richardson, Texas through the dealership Classic Italia, Inc. on July 16, 1987. The current owner, a Nevada resident, purchased the car in 1997 and has stored and maintained it over the past 20 years. The mileage currently showing is consistent with the condition of the car, as well as the Carfax and service records. In 2004, with 20,031 miles, a service was performed, addressing the exhaust system ECU, thermo couplers, cooling fans, and A/C system, totaling $3,311.15. In 2011, with 22,833 miles, a major engine-out belt service was performed tending to other details in the engine while it was removed. The total for this service was $10,608.38, with an additional service order for approximately $3,200 covering brakes, clutch, and a comprehensive tune up when the engine was reinstalled. In June 2018, with 25,379 miles, the car was serviced, replacing the left stub axle and seal, the shifter seal, a new fuel hose was installed, and the catalytic converter was replaced, totaling over $3,400. Today the car shows 25,545 miles and includes service invoices dating back to 1999 and a clean Carfax report showing long term Nevada ownership and original delivery to Texas.
Today, this low mile matching-numbers Testarossa presents with factory components and honest finishes in very good condition. The Rosso Corsa paint is glossy, clean, and appears to have been properly maintained showing only minor road chips and scuffs at the front of the car. The paint is glossy but does display some swirl marks which could be reduced through a careful paint correction. The bumper caps are smoothly fit to the body with no significant warping, and the black portion of the front air dam has only light wear. Overall the finish is of very good quality and nicely detailed. The factory wheels are in very nice condition with the right rear wheel showing two small scuffs on the outside bead edge of the wheel rim, while the other three wheels are free of curb marks. The glass, trim, and Testarossa signature black accents are all in excellent condition, including the emblems and script. The lighting and lenses throughout the car are nicely preserved and properly detailed.
The car was originally fitted with an unusual two-tone red and black interior, which it retains today in very good condition. The leather remains clean, showing slight wear and some firmness, but no significant fading. The is some surface wear on the left bolster of the driver’s seat and minor pulling along the top surface of the dashboard near one of the vents, again far less then most original interiors of this vintage will show. The dash and black panels with rotating knobs all appear clean, vibrant, and functional, bearing appropriate original factory finishes. The nicely accented red carpeting and kick-plates all remain clean and devoid of significant scuffs or stains, showing slight use in the pedal area and along the sills.
The engine compartment and trunk are remarkably well-preserved with no significant wear in either location. The matching numbers engine has been properly maintained, retaining factory finishes, correct hardware with proper hoses, correct air cleaner, and properly specified wires. Cosmetically, the engine compartment is clean, showing correct factory stickers and markings, reflecting a tidy factory appearance. The painted red heads, from which the Testarossa name is historically derived, are clean and correctly finished as are the intake plenums with the raw aluminum casting finish accented by red paint and embossed Ferrari cast lettering. The trunk liners and carpet are very clean as is the fresh spare tire and specialized matching rim, with factory sticker. The chassis appears quite nice, free from any visible structural damage, and generally tidy and dry, with mild evidence of road use typical of a car that has been enjoyed.
The car starts instantly and idles well. Driving is both exciting and pleasant with progressive acceleration, great torque, and wonderful power on hand to delight even the most experienced performance drivers. Visibility is surprisingly good given the width of the car and the low stance. Seating position is excellent even for taller people with easy to reach controls, smooth shifter, and progressive clutch action. The car is surprisingly civilized and easy to use. It’s an effortless car to cover distance in quickly. The ease and composure of the driving experience is surprising given that this is one of the most iconic and powerful modern Ferraris ever built. The car comes with two sets of keys, the Ferrari leather pouch with full books set including service book, and jack with jack bag, spanner, and other tire changing tools.
This very desirable and well-kept Rosso Corsa Ferrari Testarossa offers exceptional performance in a stunning and uniquely designed car that will continue to draw admirers for decades to come. Coming out of long-term enthusiastic ownership, this car has great integrity and is further distinguished by its unusual original interior.
