Description

1987 Mercedes-Benz 560SL
s/n WDBBA48D6JA076675
White with Grey Leather Interior

Mercedes-Benz SL series cars uphold a tradition of excellence, performance, and luxury that has continued for over half a century. The convertibles in particular, with their rigid removable hardtops are legendary in build quality and longevity, using some of the finest materials and engineering to create excellent touring cars.

The SL has been through several iterations, but by 1986 Mercedes-Benz delivered their most powerful SL to the U.S. - the 560SL. The new 5.6-liter Bosch Fuel-Injected V-8 engine delivered 227 hp, which was much needed to support the hefty but well-engineered chassis and luxury appointments. Top speed increased from the previous 380SL to 130 mph, with 0- 60mph times dramatically reduced. With the added torque and power from the V8, the revised SL offered a new rear suspension and limited-slip differential which resulted in dramatically improved handling. The new 4 piston disc brakes also received larger discs (accompanied by an anti-lock system), which vastly improved stopping power. Mercedes-Benz also added leather upholstery, an integrated alarm system, and a driver’s side air bag, all of which brought up the price tag to a robust $48,000.00.

This car has been very well maintained, as evidenced by the very nice overall condition of both the exterior and interior. First serviced in December 1987 at Jim Slemons Imports, Newport Beach, Ca, the car appears to have been serviced regularly in Southern California for most of it’s pampered life (Maintenance book, included with car). The bright white paint is glossy and smooth throughout and other than the far corner of the right rear fender (noted only by finding minor overspray in the wheel well), it appears to be the original paint. The painted pin stripes are buffing off slightly in some areas, but the textured rocker panels are in excellent condition as are all the correctly rolled wheel lip openings. The chrome and various rubber trim are all in very good condition and show no notable flaws or excess blemishing. The interior is in excellent condition showing only minor wear, which is surprising for a car of this age. Carpet and floor mats are tidy and the carpeting in the trunk is in very good condition.

The engine compartment is nicely kept and well maintained, further evidencing a very original car with no major modifications. Mileage appears to be original at 110,000, supported by the carfax indicating no damage and mileage from 1993 – 55k, 1995 – 69k, and 1997 – 108k. The undercarriage of the car is very well maintained with no evidence of damage, no signs of chassis rust, and no evidence of major body work. These cars are known to show signs of rust especially around the wheel arches, sills, jacking points, floor and front fenders. This car shows no signs of any rust in these typical areas, consistent with it having been a California car for most if not all its life (carfax recorded back to 1993 showing it inspected in Yorba Linda, CA).

The car starts easily both on cold and warm starts and the four-speed automatic transmission is easily engaged for smooth acceleration off the line. Shifting is consistently good and acceleration comes on strong when approaching freeway speeds, with kick-down responding as expected. Freeway speeds are leisurely and comfortable. The car steers nicely without much effort and braking is very good with minimal foot pedal pressure required to bring it down from freeway speeds to a smooth and complete stop.
The radio and A/C work as do the lights, turn indicators, as expected. Power windows go up and down smoothly and all glass is in very good condition. Tires show excellent tread and the newer chrome plated Mercedes style rims are a nice modern touch to the classic lines of this well-kept 560SL. The car comes with the owner’s manual and minor ownership reference literature including an original service book with multiple entries from 1987-1995.

Beautifully appointed and well cared for over the past forty years, this Mercedes-Benz 560SL offers luxury and elegance with sporting driving pleasure, both as a convertible or as a solid roof touring car. The very nice condition and wonderful color combination make this car an excellent car for long range driving or impetuous coast highway spins to romantic destinations.
