1987 Porsche 930 Turbo

Black with Black Leather Interior

Since it’s introduction a half century ago, the Porsche 911 Turbo (also known as the 930) has become an icon of performance supremacy. After massive success pioneering turbocharged engines in the 917 Can Am and 911-based sports cars, Porsche developed a reliable and capable turbocharged road car for the consumer market. Contemporary road tests battled for superlatives regarding the effortless speed and deceptive composure the Turbo achieved. The 930 quickly distinguished itself among the supercar elite, placing Porsche in this lofty category, far above the mid-range price offerings in the sports car world. Indeed the 930 arrived as a game-changer for Porsche, heralding decades of performance perfection, and continuing to stun enthusiastic admirers decades later.

In many ways, the production 930 was diametrically opposed to Porsche's previous high performance 911, the Carrera RS. Whereas the early series RS was a raw and elemental homologated racecar adapted for the road, the 930 was a proper flagship; a luxurious and refined car meant to effortlessly cover great distances at high speed. However, during this period, competition Porsche Turbos were cleaning up on the racetrack. The 930's lurid fender flares and rear spoiler gave the car a distinctive and aggressive presence, gracing cover after cover of many a performance magazine. Although relatively affordable and overlooked by collectors for many years, 930s have emerged as collectible cars thanks to their iconic styling, innovative technology, and direct connection to some of Porsche's most successful race cars.

Initially available in a non-intercooled 3.0 liter variant, a 3.3 liter intercooled variant superseded the 3.0 for the 1978 model year. By 1980, US laws had evolved enough to prevent the further sale of the 930 by Porsche North America, and it was not until 1986 when the incorporation of an oxygen sensor, electronic assistance for the mechanical fuel injection system, and a three-way catalytic converter permitted its return to the US. Thus, the market for US cars expanded, including this handsome car shown here.

This particular car is a 1987 US market car sold new with factory installed emission equipment, and thus a 50 state car. Originally sold new to former San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown, who was a California State Assemblyman when he owned the car. Brown, known for his impeccable taste in clothes and fine art, clearly had the same taste for fine cars. In the years since its Mayoral ownership. the car has accumulated only 71,000 original miles as verified from the numerous records dating back to 1988, and a current Carfax report. Records sold with the car include detailed service and repairs from 1988 with mileage recorded by qualified Porsche specialists. In 1995, the car was sold to our dealership with an odometer reading of 15,324.

The current owner has enjoyed this car along with many other exotics in his personal collection for several years. Proper care has been given to the documentation by all previous owners, as shown in a very complete history of service including the following items of note. A 60k service was performed in 2013 including valve adjustments, new spark plugs, compression test, valve cover gaskets, 44k decarbonizer, new distributor cap, new rotor, and all filters and fluids replaced. Additional work that year included the installation of a new alternator. Further review of the receipts include a new starter in 2010, complete 30k service in 2008, replacement of cam O-rings and oil hoses in 2006, CV boots and exhaust gasket work in 2005, a new clutch, flywheel resurface, and general service in 2003, 15k service in 1995, and two dealer service invoices dated from 1989 and 1988 where a replacement key was purchased.

Cosmetically, this Porsche boasts an excellent presentation. The car was just repainted to a very high standard, resulting in excellent cosmetics. The paint has excellent gloss throughout with all trim nicely cared for and properly preserved. The body is straight and solid with very nice panel fit and easy operation of doors, hood, and deck lid. The trim and badges are in very nice shape, as are the lights, glass, and plastic lenses. The exterior rubber is excellent shape, indicating the car has been stored indoors. The wheels are in excellent shape and wear Bridgestone performance tires with plenty of tread remaining.

The interior is in excellent original condition showing no evidence of damage, just light use expected from a car that has been properly cared for. The leather on the Sport Seats remains supple and shows only light wear to the side bolster of the driver’s seat. The carpets are in very nice original condition. The dashboard is similarly nice without cracks or abrasions, and the gauges and switches are correct and in excellent cosmetic condition. The door panels are in excellent condition as well and the rear seats appear to have been minimally occupied judging by the near new finish to the leather. The condition and integrity of the interior further supports the indicated low mileage.

The engine compartment appears unmodified and has not been restored. The finishes display evidence of use but is mercifully dry and undisturbed, with the exception of proper service - a rarity among 930s. The trunk is also pleasingly original. The carpet shows no aging and the structural elements beneath the carpets are excellent. The correct spare, tire pressure kit, and tool roll are present with the car, once again, in excellent condition. The underside of the car is clean, dry, and shows no evidence of compromise to the floor or structure. The suspension components are clean and dry, again confirming the low miles and proper service this 930 Porsche has seen.

The car runs and drives very well. The engine flicks to life quickly, settling into a deep but eager Porsche idle. The clutch engages smoothly and releases properly. The gearbox has good synchromesh and linkage action, making both up and downshifts easy and smooth. The steering has the inimitable light and communicative 911 feel and the chassis and suspension are tight and reassuring. The driving experience of this sympathetically kept, low mileage car is truly a delight given the modifications one often sees in these late 80s supercars.

The car is sold with a large collection of records and service receipts tracing the mileage and ownership of this car over the past 30 years. Included with the car is an excellent complete set of tools in a very nice pouch, a complete two-volume Porsche service manual, original sales brochure, owner’s manual and warranty and maintenance books in the original leather folio, a copy of the California Willie Brown registration, the original steering wheel, third brake light, a spare key, and a pair of door handles.

This is an excellent opportunity to acquire a beautifully finished 50 state, US market, low mileage Porsche 930 Turbo with excellent maintenance history, unique ownership. and superb driving manners.
