Description
1987 Porsche Turbo 930S `Slantnose`
VIN: WPOJB0932HS051592
Black with Black Interior with Red Piping
The `flachbau` version of the 930 (known also as the 930S and the `slantnose` in English) was a factory produced version of the 930 Turbo that evoked the revised front fenders featured on Porsche`s tremendously successful 935 racing models. The 935`s featured more aerodynamic flat fenders in addition to some other outlandish aerodynamic aids, and were ludicrously fast, winning Le Mans in 1979. Wanting to capture this unique look for their street cars, many aftermarket tuners produced their own versions of this bodywork for standard production street 930 Turbos starting in the early 1980`s, though the quality of conversions varied tremendously, with some kits even being completed in fiberglass instead of steel. Porsche offered its own version of this bodywork for street cars as early as 1981, but only through its special order sonderwunsch (`special wish`) program, and it was not until several years later that the `slantnose` became a regularly available albeit expensive option. In fact, by 1989, the `slantnose` option cost about $25,000, above and beyond the already substantial $65,000 pricetag of the standard 930. In addition to the revised front fenders, these cars also featured boxed rocker sill extensions and large vents let into the rear fenders, which admit air for the auxiliary oil cooler on the right side. The cars were and remain highly exclusive and very rare.
This particular example is in a tasteful black on black combination rather than some of the more peculiar colors that were in vogue during the 1980`s. The `slantnose` look is as stunning as ever and this car is a well-maintained car with good options and low miles. Original options include headlamp washers, rear windscreen wiper, and full leather interior, which in addition to covering the seats, also covers the door panels, door pulls and map pocket lids, centre console, and sun visors. The car comes with records from the last several years, which outline regular maintenance to keep the car in good mechanical condition. Included among these within the last few years are major and minor services, new tires, and fixes for small items like the windscreen washers and central locking. Such details indicate that the car has been fastidiously maintained, and the car was also fitted with an aftermarket CD player receiver. The age of the license plate indicates that the car has been in California since at least 1992.
The exterior is in very well-preserved original condition. The paint appears to be original with just a handful of chips and scratches about the body, and the usual ones found on the nose. The rubber remains supple and uncracked, and all glass and lenses are excellent as well. The wheels are polished and look smart, and the tires are Michelins in good condition.
The interior is in fine original condition with light wear appropriate for the age and mileage of the car. The dashboard is in as new condition with no cracking or fading. The carpets show very light wear and the seats show minimal wear with just the typical bolster wear on the driver`s seat. The headliner is in very fine condition though it shows some evidence that it was red in the past and has been dyed. All switches and components function properly including the windows, central locks, electric mirrors etc.
The engine compartment and trunk are both in nice original condition with no modifications and the trunk contains the tool roll, original compressor and a car cover.
This car drives as it should. The prodigious thrust once the turbo has spooled up lives up to the legend, providing eye-opening acceleration, and the car corners and stops as it should.
This is an opportunity to acquire a true legend. The Porsche Turbo, especially the slantnose, is an automotive icon not just of the 1970`s and 1980`s, but also of all time. Any car nut who grew up in the 1980`s had a poster on their bedroom wall of the Turbo (along with one of the Countach), and there are countless children who one day promised themselves they would one day own this, the original Turbo. This example has been well looked after and is a low mileage car in a nice color combination and is a chance for someone to realize that dream. With these cars historically significant as the original usable supercar, they are a sound investment, with appreciation likely in the future.
