Description

1993 Mercedes 600SEC Moonstone/Grey Leather VIN: WDBGA76E9PA132653 Introduced in 1991, the W140 generation of Mercedes S-Class was and is a technological tour de force. The specification and features were over the top, including double paned side windows for sound insulation and of course the ubiquitous other luxury features like leather upholstery, 6-cd changer, and heated seats. The car also is fitted with small fender markers that rise out of the rear fenders when the car is shifted into reverse so that the driver can see exactly where the end of the fender is. The trunk latch is electrically actuated so that one merely needs to set the trunk down and it will close automatically. There is also a neat retractable handle that pops out when the trunk is unlatched so that the owner will not have to soil his or her hand to open the trunk. On a larger scale, the car was more aerodynamic and sophisticated than its predecessors, and the ultimate example of this car was motivated by a 12-cylinder motor that displaced no less than six litres. Making just under 400hp in an otherwise understated package, the car was a true sleeper that can still get up and go with the best of them. Available as a 4-door sedan, and also as a 2-door pillarless coupe, this was, unequivocally, the finest and most expensive Mercedes-Benz that you could buy. Produced in essentially unchanged form until 1999, this 1993 example is almost visually indistinguishable from a 1999 model. Today, these cars are appreciated for their embodiment of the legendary Mercedes build quality and are recognized as among the last of the old-style cars that still retain the immense, and yes, even bank-like solidity that saw Mercedes automobiles regularly running to five hundred thousand (and more) miles. This example, however, has covered a mere 35,600 miles since new and is accordingly in outstanding condition. It has been in California from new and has been maintained regardless of cost. It is in excellent mechanical condition, with the following recent work having been performed: several thousand dollars of work on the climate control system, new rear suspension accumulators and level valve assembly, full service (completed in February of 2007), and brake fluid change. The car has also been fitted with German specification springs and sway bars, which were specially imported from Germany. Designed to keep this two and half ton automobile firmly under control during sustained high speed driving, these are considerably more substantial than the components specified for the more floaty and comfort-oriented US market. Coupled with the attractive AMG Monobloc alloy wheels and Bridgestone Potenza S-03 tires (!), this car handles in a way that no five thousand pound car should. Nevertheless, it remains very comfortable and civilized to use. Cosmetically, this car is in excellent order, as one would expect given the mileage. The paintwork is largely excellent, with only one really notable flaw to speak of, a scratch on the hood that extends to the grille. There are a few small chips from road use, but less than would be expected for the mileage. There is no fading, dents, or significant dings. The chrome wheels look smart but do show a bit of deterioration to the finish in a few areas, and the glass and lights are all excellent. The interior feels truly special. From the interesting wood door releases to the courteous seatbelt presenters, there is definitely a sense of occasion to the interior. In terms of condition, the interior is also excellent. The leather remains soft and only slightly worn in the usual wear spots on the drivers seat, and the wood is lustrous and free from cracking. The carpets are free from wear and there are overmats. With the car come the manual pack, service records for the last several years, and extra keys, and the car is registered thru July of 2008. This is an opportunity to acquire one of these rare and prestigious cars in top condition, and with some unusual and desirable additions. It has been enthusiastically owned and maintained by its current owner from Carmel, CA in a manner that befits its original $140,000 price tag. Today, for a considerably more reasonable price, you can own the ideal personal luxury coupe from an era of Mercedes` history that will sadly never be repeated.
