General History

Porsche’s iconic 356 Speedster exemplifies the purity of the true sports car ideal, heralding performance over comfort, yet delivering a beautifully conceived sports car – one that has endured among collectors and enthusiasts alike. In 1994 Porsche offered a new Speedster based on the Type 964, featuring the 247 bhp 3.6 liter air-cooled six-cylinder engine. Originally intending to build approximately 3,000 units, Porsche ceased production after just two years, assembling a mere 925 units in total. In the spirit of the original Speedster, creature comforts were minimal including a trim convertible top. The true beauty of the car however was in the clean and simple profile, air-cooled engine, and 5-speed manual transmission. With the lowered windscreen, finished with a low-profile windshield frame and thin A pillars, the front look was low and mean, echoed by the hard-shell rear tonneau completing the unique vision. Best of all, with the taut convertible top in place, the hunkered down stance delivered that iconic Porsche performance profile - one of purpose, speed, and agility.

Delivered with the desirable G50/05 5-speed manual transmission, further documented on the front storage compartment lid, this Porsche was optioned from the factory with the following equipment:

The second owner purchased the car in 2010 with 10,380 miles recorded at the time of registration in Colorado. Minimal miles accumulated during the next four years until the car was sold again in 2014, showing just 10,728 miles. At that time, the car was next registered to the current owner’s LLC in Montana. Regular services performed on the car include oil and filter changes, brake fluid flush, wiper replacement, electrical system checks, and tire pressure/condition checks. In 2018, Fantasy Junction sold the car to the current consigning owner. At the time of sale, 11,329 were indicated. Over the past five years of current ownership, the car has acquired approximately 700 additional miles, now indicating 12,036. A new battery was installed in the car in preparation for consignment.

Current Condition

Today this Porsche Speedster is a model of thoughtful preservation and careful use. The paint has been beautifully preserved with high gloss and no marks of significance, showing excellent luster and deep gloss to the highly reflective black finish. The metal body surfaces have been measured with a digital paint meter, returning single digit numbers reflective of factory applied paint. The lower rocker panel surfaces, front valance, and rear fenders are free from notable chips or damage. All glass is original to the car and shows essentially as new. Lighting, trim, and emblems are further beautifully preserved and nicely detailed. The original top has a tight fit to the windshield frame and shows beautifully when fastened in place. The hard-shell tonneau has a small chip on the passenger side at the underside edge. The wheels are free from curb rash and the optional colored Porsche center crests add a nice colorful factory touch, while the tires show ample remaining tread for further driving enjoyment.

As one might expect, the black leather interior of the car remains unmodified, with all factory components in place and excellent finishes throughout. The upholstery, carpets, dashboard, instruments, and switches all appear as new with no sun damage, vivid color, and excellent touch response. The instruments have bright color and clarity, while the dashboard and steering wheel both exhibit fresh textures and no significant signs of age. The supple black leather seats display excellent surfaces with excellent tight seams, flexible foam support, and no notable bolster marks. The matching black carpeting is also in excellent condition, showing virtually no wear in the foot-wells. Even the unique Speedster leather door pulls nested in the smooth lightweight door panels show only modest signs of age. Every surface of the interior has been delightfully maintained without compromise, essentially as one might expect from a preservation grade car.

The engine compartment is exceptionally clean, beautifully detailed, and unmodified. The factory finishes are consistent with the 12,000 miles recorded on this car. Even the engine stickers show little to no signs of heat cycling or edge wear. The front storage compartment is in equally exceptional condition, with no modifications and very nice visual presentation, appearing again as new, including the options code sticker still in place under the storage lid. The factory correct red rim spare is in place as is the factory air compressor. Underneath the car the factory surfaces have been properly maintained, kept clean and tidy, and remain as built when delivered new. The correct factory finishes exhibit modest heat cycling evident on the exhaust system and engine casting surfaces.

The car starts instantly and immediately settles into a smooth idle. The clutch and G50 gearbox work in harmony moving effortlessly through all five speeds and reverse. The 3.6-liter engine, braking, and steering were top level when new and remain so today offering premium Porsche performance, remarkably so nearly 30 years later. Windows operate up and down smoothly and various interior features, switches, air conditioning, and instruments also perform as expected. Included with the car is a host of original items offered at delivery when new including all books and delivery pamphlets, Porsche owners’ pouch, tools and tool roll, factory jack, and the original Porsche air compressor.

This is an exceptional opportunity to acquire a wonderfully preserved and nicely optioned 5-speed Porsche Speedster. One of only 925 examples built, this triple black original example stands as a highly appreciable low mile example that will be continually sought after by premier Porsche collectors and enthusiasts. This car is ready to be driven, shown, or continually preserved in tribute to the timeless legacy of amazing sports cars built by Porsche.
