Description

2000 BMW Z8 Roadster
VIN WBAEJ134XYAH60174
Titanium Silver Metallic with Black Leather Interior

In 1997, BMW released the Z07 styling study, which became the production Z8 with impressively minimal changes. Initially penned by Henrik Fisker (later to become head of design at Aston Martin and then develop his own global automobile company), the Z07 concept was inspired by the legendary 507 and was never intended for production. But the car generated overwhelmingly enthusiastic and BMW elected to make a production version of the car. Only one configuration, the roadster, was available, and would be constructed from 2000 to 2003. The production Z8 differed only slightly from the concept Z07, carefully retaining the exquisite themes and details of the Z07, while offering a refined production car. The Z8 featured a long hood and short deck, placing occupants nearly at the rear axle, in keeping with the traditions of great sports car design. The small doors, curvaceous fenders, and low-slung stance evoked a retro feel while simultaneously creating a fresh and unique look. All Z8s came with removable hard tops, unique keys, an embossed tool roll and a host of other Z8-specific extras, and a color-matched dashboard with centrally placed instruments.

Mechanically, the Z8 was both sophisticated and technologically bespoke. The aluminum chassis is extremely lightweight and is paired with forged independent suspension components. The M5's S62 4.9 liter quad-cam V8 engine, mounted well behind the front axle for optimal weight distribution, delivered a remarkably usable 400hp. Not simply a pretty face, the all new Z8 arrived as a legitimately high performance machine, yielding .92g of lateral acceleration, and posting a 4.2 second 0-60 time. Car and Driver's tests proved acceleration, grip, and braking figures competitive with the contemporary Ferrari 360. Priced at $130,000, just 2,382 examples were sold in the United States. Today, Z8s have continued to appreciate in value due in part to their exceptional design, high performance, and limited production.

This truly stunning California example has travelled fewer than 11,000 miles since purchased brand new in Southern California. The first owner, a resident of Beverly Hills and a multiple car collector, retained the car until selling it to the current owner in 2003. The car has been in the care of the second and current owner for the past fifteen years with the added enhancement of the factory Z8 performance package, installed in 2006 including professional wheel alignment specific to this performance package. Beautifully appointed with air-conditioning, 6 speed manual, 4 wheel disc brakes, power telescoping steering wheel, power seat and one-touch power windows, BMW Multi-Information radio, hardtop, and 18 inch 5-spoke alloy wheels, this car has been obsessively maintained since new and remains extremely complete.

The current Northern California owner has meticulously serviced the car since 2003 with Z8 specialist Matt Carver of Peter Pan BMW in Burlingame, CA. Recent work in January 2019 included the purchase and installation of 4 new BMW Z8 stock alloy wheels with 4 new Michelin Pilot Sport tires, balancing and alignment. Service in 2018 included a new battery, two new BMW gas pressurized spring bars for the trunk lid, and California smog inspection (passed). In 2016 with 10,441 miles the car was serviced with oil and filter change, coolant flush, a new OEM BMW windshield, new starter, and new auto-dim interior rear view mirror, totaling $4,290. Previous service in 2012 included new cooling system and heater hoses, brake fluid flush, manual transmission fluid change, and oil and filter. In 2010 with 9,523 miles, the car was serviced and the clutch delay valve removed and retained (included with the sale) along with the installation of a new CD-changer magazine. In 2008, a new rear glass was installed for the hardtop (damage occurred while moving the top on the roller stand) and new hardtop covers were installed on the windshield header. Further records show that the car has consistently passed California emissions inspection always on the first test for the duration of the car’s life, documented since 2003 when it was smogged for the first time.

Today, the stunning all-aluminum body features the original Titanium Silver Metallic paint with exceptional overall finish and glossy luster. The factory original body panels are beautifully formed with excellent panel gaps and tight fitting to the front and rear fascias. The car shows very little evidence of road use with a small number of very light marks on the front of the car from road use, and one minor scratch on the underside surface of the front air dam, which is visible only under close inspection beneath the car. The brand new BMW wheels are in excellent condition showing no scuffs or marks and finished off with brand new Michelin Pilot Sport A/S Plus tires. They were fitted to replace a set of chrome wheels the car previously wore. The new OEM BMW windshield is free from chips and all other glass, lenses, and emblems are in as new condition. The beautifully finished chrome details throughout the exterior of the car further validate the exceptional care devoted to this remarkable example. Every aspect of the car has been carefully maintained and preserved by the current owner who was determined to retain the utmost originality as evidenced by expert dealership services by one of the nation’s foremost Z8 specialists.

The interior is an artful translation of the iconic BMW 507 featuring handsome brushed aluminum and chrome finishes, beautifully supported by contoured supple black leather seats, sculpted door panels, and artfully placed bespoke interior accents. The center console is punctuated by a clean array of switches and purposeful controls, while the fluid dashboard features gorgeous instruments with excellent color, remarkable clarity, and dramatic nighttime illumination in the traditional BMW orange. The dashboard indicators and interior systems function as expected with excellent digital instrumentation delivering critical system information when the key is engaged. The leather wrapped steering wheel, itself inspired by the original 507 design, is beautifully stitched and remains in excellent condition. The carpet and floor mats are in near new condition, showing only minor use to the driver’s side floor mat and very lightly worn doorsill thresholds. Overall, the interior presents in near new condition with excellent finishes, captivating details, and an inviting presence. The hardtop is in excellent condition with smooth felt lining for the headliner and an accompanying stand for safe storage. The factory hard top tool, sail panel vent covers, and locking mechanism covers are all present. The very end tips of the hardtop have been slightly nicked during storage, but have been carefully touched up with correct matching paint and are only notable upon close examination. The black canvas convertible top and top boot display fine finishes on both the exterior and interior, with clear rear window and soft flannel rear window protector installed when the top has been stowed. The trunk compartment has been beautifully preserved, showing little evidence of use to the excellent trunk liner and carpeting, opening and shutting smoothly, with assistance from recently replaced gas struts, just as one might expect from such a well-preserved and lightly used car.

Under the hood, this immaculate Z8 is even more impressive featuring factory original components, the original engine, and excellent detailing throughout the engine compartment. The engine and all components retain their correct factory finishes, factory stampings, correct labels, and original factory markings. All engine, air cleaner, ducting, and panels remain in excellent condition. Underneath the car, detailed inspection reveals a properly maintained and minimally driven car, consistent with the indicated 10,000 miles documented since new. The exhaust system, lightly tinted from use, castings, floor pan, oil pan, and suspension components are clean and tidy, and all heat shielding remains factory formed and properly in place.

The car starts, drives, and handles as one might expect from a dutifully maintained, low mileage Z8. The superb ride, effortless 6-speed manual, and sure-footed handling are all hallmarks of these exceptionally engineered cars, delivering confidence and power even in gentle use. When summoned for more spirited use, the Z8 continues to deliver with touring composure, coupled with exhilarating moments of sheer joy and sparkling performance. Braking is superlative, seating position perfect, and with the top down, a symphonic burst sings out the perfect vintage tone to even an everyday drive. The car comes with a voluminous list of factory original accessories rarely found with even the most carefully preserved cars:
