Description

2002 Ferrari 360 Spider F1
VIN: ZFFYT53A920128740
Rosso Fiorano with Saddle Leather

In 2000, a year after Ferrari had released the all-new 360 Modena, the Spider was offered. The original design was truly remarkable as it offered one of the most advanced production methods of construction combined with a newly derived V8 engine. The aluminum space frame chassis was state of the art being 40% stiffer than the F355 and yet 28% lighter. The new engine developed just under 400hp, while taking advantage of the developments incorporated using advanced aerodynamic testing. Another critical feature of the 360 was the decision to locate the engine in a layout that no longer necessitated costly “engine out” timing belt services. Visually the new Pininfarina design was unlike anything before, curvaceous, yet aggressive and the first to feature the now iconic clear engine cover. Fresh and innovative, the 360 delivered a distinct Ferrari look and feel combined with ground-breaking performance.

The Spider version, unveiled at the 2000 Geneva Motor Show, allowed for high speed open-air driving and carefully controlled cockpit air management which reduced interior wind buffeting. Far more than just a 360 with the roof removed, significant structural engineering included strengthening the sills, stiffening the forward section of the floor pan, redesigning the windshield frame for more support, twin structural roll over bars, and added side impact beams for improved impact safety. The soft top smoothly disappeared into the rear bodywork at the touch of a button, fitting under the contoured rear body section. An interesting variation in the Spider is the unique redesign of the intake manifolds, which were relocated to allow for soft top stowage in the retracted position. Contemporary automotive press raved about the new 360 calling it one of the most important advancements in the history of the company, including highly positive reviews of the F1 gearbox, which allowed for fingertip activated, lightening quick gear changes without removing your hands from the steering wheel.

According to the Carfax recently printed for this car, this particular 360 Spider has had two owners since it was delivered new in 2002. Finished in the stunning color combination of Rosso Fiorano with saddle leather interior, the beautiful paint contrasts the interior perfectly, with sporting elegance and performance accents. The first owner retained the car until the current owner purchased it in early 2005. At that time, the car had 6,997 miles showing and a record of regular service, verified by the invoices included with the car. Shortly after purchase, Ferrari of San Francisco performed work on the car including timing belt replacement, 6,000 mile service, and ECU recall service. In September 2005, with 12,800 miles recorded, a new clutch assembly was installed and both front and rear brake pads were replaced, totaling over $8,000.00. In 2006, with 20,000 miles a new front rim was installed along with two new tires, and an oil change performed. In 2008 the car was damaged in the front due to a minor accident, necessitating repairs that totaled about $15,000.00 exclusive to the front of the car. Work was performed by qualified experts at Anthony’s Auto Craft, replacing parts as needed and refinishing the body panels using factory matched paint (invoice included with the car). More recent work includes timing belt service, filters, oil change, and new cam cover gaskets at 42,880 miles. In 2016 with 45,000 miles covered, a 45k service was performed including a new ignition coil. At this time, all four wheels were restored, and the front bumper repainted to improve the cosmetic appearance.

In September 2016, $24,274.19 was spent in service at San Francisco Motorsports including the replacement of sticky interior buttons and knob replacement for interior components throughout the dash, doors, and console. Sticky buttons are common for Ferraris of this era, replacement alone was $3,000.00. At the same time, the fuel pump seals were replaced, four rollover valves were replaced, all shocks removed, serviced, and reinstalled, new front and rear upper and lower ball joints were replaced, as well as new front and rear tie rod ends. The motor mounts were also replaced, rear brake pads installed, rear rotors turned, and both rear top rams/covers replaced on the convertible top mechanism. In 2018 with 47,700 miles indicated, the clutch assembly was replaced, an annual fluid and filter service performed. The shift actuator was rebuilt, and all elastic soft top straps replaced for smooth up and down top actuation. In 2019 with 48,000 miles indicated, the ECU temp. control units and thermocouples were replaced.

Today this 360 Spider presents in very good overall condition having benefited from recent mechanical work and thoughtful care as needed. The finish is quite nice throughout, showing excellent gloss and just a few minor paint flaws typical of a car that has been driven, but properly serviced. The sloping windshield, see-through engine cover, race inspired twin roll hoop, and low profile create a dramatic and memorable appearance. The glass, lighting, and lenses are in very good to excellent condition with only minor chips or marks evident upon closer examination. The emblems and script are in very good condition. The body panels display very good fit throughout the car with minor variation in the front bumper cap seam. Doors and deck lid show consistent panel gaps. The inner surfaces and door jambs appear clean and well-maintained. The wheels are in excellent condition with good tread remaining on all four tires. The top raises and lowers smoothly, owning to the recent service on the mechanism and elastic straps. The top appears in very good condition with tight fit, crisp borders, clean edges and good seams.

The interior of the car is in especially nice condition. The leather is supple and smooth with excellent surfacing and no marks of note. The dashboard, instruments and switches are all in near new condition, having benefitted from the replacement of nearly all Ferrari components formerly subject to stickiness. The steering wheel, dash pad, and instrument cluster are free of notable wear. The driver’s seat has no significant marks, just minor bolster wear, appropriate for the mileage. All other leather surfaces including the center console, door panels, visors, and A-pillars are in excellent condition. Carpeting is in very good condition showing only minor evidence of use in the drivers footbox area. The inner liner for the convertible top is also in very good condition, as is the trunk compartment.

Under the hood, the innovative V8 has been properly maintained with excellent castings, factory housings, and original accessory equipment as delivered. Ferrari number plates, factory installation stickers, and verification markings are in place and in very good to excellent condition. The original engine and engine compartment are clean and correct. The underside of the car shows signs of use including a few scrapes and scuff marks, scratch marks on the front and rear underbody panels directly under the front and rear bumpers, and mild scratches to the belly pans.

The car drives and shifts. Power delivery is sharp and exhilarating. Road manners are comfortable under general conditions, but when prompted, deliver rewardingly quick jaunts up to highway speeds. Cornering and braking are as one might expect from a car developed utilizing Formula 1 technology. A complete Ferrari tool set and roll, factory manuals, and an extra set of keys are included with the car, as well as copious records for regular upkeep.

This driver-ready Ferrari 360 F1 is a wonderful example of one of the most important and ground-breaking open sports cars ever offered from Ferrari. Known history and regular service/maintenance records further validate the care given to this handsome and capable car. The beautiful leather interior and striking metallic red exterior make this Ferrari a compelling and dynamic combination of grace and power ready to please the next fortunate enthusiast.
