General History

Entering the new millennium, Ferrari was determined to offer the very best in technology and performance in their next car. Introduced in 1999, the 360 Modena was the pinnacle of design and engineering. Every aspect of the car indicated that Ferrari was poised to dominate the next century. The original design was truly remarkable as it offered one of the most advanced production methods of construction combined with a newly derived V8 engine. The aluminum space frame chassis was state of the art being 40% stiffer than the F355 and yet 28% lighter. The new engine developed just under 400hp, while taking advantage of the developments incorporated using advanced aerodynamic testing. Another critical feature of the 360 was the decision to locate the engine in a layout that no longer necessitated costly “engine out” timing belt services.

Visually the new Pininfarina design was unlike anything before, curvaceous, yet aggressive and the first to feature the now iconic clear engine cover. Fresh and innovative, the 360 delivered a distinct Ferrari look that set the standard for future generations to come. The design remained in production until 2004, the last year for the 360 series. Although Ferrari built a total of 4,199 US market Modenas, just 1,810 were coupes, 469 of which were outfitted with the desirable 6-speed manual transmission.

History of this Example

According to the Carfax and owner records supplied with this car, this particular 360 has been under careful care with consistent mileage recorded since being delivered new to Seattle, WA. After delivery, the car remained in the Seattle area where it was serviced by Ferrari of Seattle as it accumulated miles under two prior owners. In 2007 the car was given a full service, fluids and filters changed, and the power steering system serviced at 4,738 miles. In 2009, Ferrari of Seattle serviced the car again, this time with 11,221 miles, and again in 2011 with 12,397 miles when a new battery was installed. That same year, the car was sold to the next owner, arriving in Seaside, CA where it remained until 2015 and later sold to the current consigning owner, then displaying 16,171 miles. The owner has used the car for various Ferrari events including participation in a few rallies. Currently showing 23,945 miles, the current owner has had the car regularly serviced at San Francisco Motorsports Services, San Rafael, CA including the following recent services documented in copies of invoices included with the car.

September 2021(23,805 miles) – All sticky knobs and switches sent out for stickynomore service and reinstalled, oil and filter change, fluid levels checked/adjusted, and air filters inspected.

June 2020 (23,349 miles)– Major service including all belts, thermostat, spark plugs, all fluids, filters, new cam seals, new cam gaskets, new gas cap, and two new Pirelli PZero tires (rear), sway bar bushings lubricated.

August 2019 (22,647 miles) – New battery, Tubi muffler and tailpipes installed, annual service performed including changing the oil, flushing the brake fluid, inspection of filters, windshield chip repair, and smog check.

Previous services include a new oil pressure sending unit, fluid and oil changes, a new gearbox mount (2017), a prior belt service under previous ownership (2015), installation of chin guards, and a prior belt service at Ferrari of Seattle (2007).

Cosmetic Overview

Today this 360 Modena presents in excellent condition overall.
The car is up to date on major service and is beautifully prepared for the next fortunate owner. The finish is quite nice throughout, showing excellent gloss on all exterior body panels with some areas treated to paint protection film including the side mirrors, rocker panel intakes, and a portion of the front fascia. The front bumper appears to have been refinished with a slight variation in black when compared to the hood and fenders. The car has been metered with a digital paint meter indicating single digits with a 10.5 noted on the roof and 13.5 for the LR quarter panel. The sloping windshield, see-through engine cover, race inspired features, and stunning profile create a dramatic and memorable appearance, enhanced by the wicked black finish. The glass, lighting, and lenses are in excellent condition with only minor evidence of use visible upon closer examination. The emblems and script are in excellent condition as is the glass. A few small rock chips in the windshield have been professionally repaired. The body panels display very good fit throughout the car with excellent panel gaps and tight closures. The inner surfaces and door jambs appear clean and well-maintained. The silver finished wheels are in excellent condition with good tread remaining on all four tires and bright red brake calipers mounted to the large, ventilated discs. The rear tires are dated 2019, while the front tires are 2010.

The interior of the car is especially nice. The black leather is supple and smooth with excellent surfacing, fine stitching, and no marks of note. The dashboard, instruments, and switches are all in near new condition, having benefited from the replacement of the notorious Ferrari components known to develop chemical stickiness due to a manufacturing flaw. The steering wheel, dash pad, and instrument cluster are free of notable wear. The driver’s seat has no significant marks and excellent bolsters. All other leather surfaces as well as the center console, door panels, visors, and A-pillars are in excellent condition. Best of all, the center console features the gated alloy gear shifter, poised to shift the 6-speed manual gearbox, embracing the rich tradition of nearly every historically important competition Ferrari since inception. Carpeting is in very good condition showing only minor evidence of use in the drivers footbox area. The inner liner for the front trunk compartment is in excellent condition as well, maintaining factory correct finishes and features consistent with the rest of the car.

Under the hood, the innovative mid-engine V8 has been properly maintained with excellent factory castings, air intake housings, and original accessory equipment as delivered. Ferrari number plates, factory installation stickers, and verification markings are in place and in excellent condition. The original engine and engine compartment are clean and correct featuring textured red cast-alloy engine intake plenums and properly finished structural components. A California emissions-compliant aftermarket Tubi muffler and tailpipes are mounted with the original exhaust components retained and offered with the car. The underside of the car shows signs of use including a few scrapes and scuff marks typically found on the aerodynamic panels that divert airflow to various areas of the car. There is no evidence of structural compromise to the chassis or any of the suspension components.

The car starts, drives, and shifts smoothly in any gear.
The manual gearbox is perfectly positioned and there is ample comfort in the cockpit even for larger frame drivers. Power delivery is sharp and exhilarating from the near 400 hp engine. Road manners are comfortable under general conditions, but when prompted, deliver jaw-dropping launches up to highway speeds with surprising composure. Cornering and braking are as one might expect from a car developed by leaders in Formula 1 technology.

This Ferrari 360 Modena is a wonderful example of one of the most important and ground-breaking modern Ferraris ever produced. Known history and consistent service/maintenance records further validate the care given to this sharp and capable Modena. The beautiful leather interior, 6-speed manual gearbox, and mid-engine design make this Ferrari a compelling and dynamic combination of power and excitement ready to please the next fortunate enthusiast.
