British Racing Green with Tan Leather and Green Piping
The quintessential British motoring experience celebrates the unbridled joy of stimulating all of our senses, and undoubtedly there is no currently available car which embodies this more than a Morgan. With fundamental architecture dating back to the 1936 introduction of the 4/4, the cars have been continuously improved and enhanced with modern technology (including new engines and improved brakes), while maintaining traditional features like solid ash frames, wire wheels, and low slung, open configurations. Adherence to these crafting traditions continues to appeal to dyed-in-the-wool anglophile enthusiasts seeking unadulterated and pure driving pleasure. Indeed the Morgan experience instantly recalls an era when driving itself was the very purpose of the occasion.
In 1968, with the introduction of the Plus 8, the Buick-derived lightweight aluminum Rover V8 offered Morgan owners more power and torque, creating a new flagship for the marque. The new motor, no stranger to British cars, was extensively used and at various times, it powered Rovers, MGs, Triumphs, and a variety of Land Rovers. When the engine finally ceased production with the conclusion of the 2004 model year Land Rover Discovery, the Plus 8 became the Roadster, which was powered by a dual overhead cam four valve per cylinder V6 engine from Ford. This remarkably efficient, lighter replacement motor delivered similar power (225 hp) with a 6700rpm redline, making it a formidable performance car while retaining its charmingly unique style and construction. Indeed because each car was essentially handmade, every aspect of the car’s appearance could be custom tailored, including the top and upholstery, exterior detailing, trim, and accessories.
This particular car is a wonderful V6 powered Morgan Roadster finished in the classic color combination of dark green with beige leather interior with contrasting dark green piping and weather equipment. A two-owner car, this example was purchased by the current owner purchased at Chariots of Palm Beach in Palm Beach, Florida on February 5, 2015 with just 5,983 miles as noted on the bill of sale. Since then, the car has been in the Pebble Beach area, where the car was driven regularly to bring its current mileage to 16,103. Outfitted with full weather equipment including a matching tonneau cover and side curtains, additional features include a 5-speed manual transmission, air-conditioning, and wire wheels.
Today this beautiful Morgan Roadster displays excellent paintwork and exterior detailing, with very minimal evidence of use throughout the exterior. The paint is glossy and smooth with excellent panel fit, nice panel gaps, and refined detailing. The stainless wire wheels are beautifully polished, accented by triple ear knock-offs. The chrome bumpers, grille blades, and other wonderful bits of bright trim surrounding the car are equally in very nice condition. The car is shod with Continental tires showing ample tread remaining. Finishing off the elegant grille and front view, a pair of yellow-lens Westinhouse fog lamps completes the quintessential British roadster theme.
The interior is in excellent condition with only light wear. The tan leather seats, door panels, and dash pad are accented by dark green piping contrasted by quintessentially British dark green carpeting, a stunningly veneered wood dash and wood rimmed steering wheel. The dash is in near new condition highlighted by elegant cream colored dial faces, polished aluminum switchgear, and other delightful handmade details. The seats are in excellent condition showing only light bolster wear, as are the covered doorsills and taut map pocket door cards. The elegant green and tan interior is contrasted with further delightful details including mechanical foot pedals, exposed fasteners on the steering wheel hub, and doorsill brightwork. The car is equipped with air conditioning, which was charged in 2016 and currently blows cold. The car is fitted with a radio with removable faceplate which has been lost at some point over the years.
Under the hood, the car presents a fine blend of old world design and modern components. The V6 engine is set well behind the front wheel center allowing for better cornering performance due to improved weight distribution. The original engine is in very nice cosmetic condition showing correct factory parts, proper fasteners, hoses, and engine management labels in place when delivered new. The underside of the hood and inner painted panels are all in excellent condition.
The Morgan driving experience is unlike any other. While the traditional layout recalls a bygone era, the car is remarkably agile and lithe. The mechanical components are modern, user-friendly, and particularly fresh, making for an enjoyable and modern driveline experience. This is particularly true of the engine, gearbox, clutch, and brakes, which all operate in tight harmony from a very comfortable driving position. The exhaust note is fabulously rorty and produces evocative periodic burbles on trailing throttle. Best of all however, is the classic car look and feel one experiences driving this uniquely built car. The chassis and suspension are solid and responsive, delivering a coherent driving experience both when cruising casually or enjoying winding country roads. Indeed the performance is genuinely exciting and downright thrilling in part because driver and passenger are positioned close to the ground and passing objects literally race by the periphery of the low cut doors. The underside of the car is in very good condition showing clean components, and sound wooden construction. A complete all weather kit with side curtains, top boot, and storage bag are included with the car. The jack (unused and still in factory wrapping), owner’s manual and pouch, as well the matching removable headrests also accompany the car.
Morgans have always enjoyed a dedicated following and this roadster certainly demonstrates why. Coupling the sense of occasion and visceral excitement of a vintage car with the contemporary reliability of a modern car, this Roadster is the best of both worlds. Presented in quintessential colors, superb condition, and with desirable options, this Morgan is ready for enchanting country drives, showing, or long distance touring, delivering all the charm and delight that only a hand crafted British sports car can offer.
