General Overview
Although electric cars have become a more common part of the automotive landscape, in 2008 a high-performance electric car was still something of a novelty. The Tesla Roadster changed everything about electric cars and public perception of their performance metrics. Originally developed as a range of conceptual engineering prototypes using a series of test platforms, by 2005, Tesla and Lotus agreed to use the Lotus Elise chassis as the basis for the new Tesla Roadster. Built with a longer wheelbase, a more robust chassis, and carbon composite body panels, the new design was lightweight, stylish, and had the benefit of low-cost manufacturing. Development continued into 2007 with the first production cars released to the public in 2008.
Though production volume was fewer than Tesla had hoped, the Roaster proved that a profitable electric car could be successfully built and sold despite being manufactured by an otherwise unknown performance brand. Using a 3-phase 4-pole AC induction electric 248 hp motor might not sound like much, but the immediacy of the acceleration was enhanced by the instant torque and lightweight platform. Coupled to a single speed fixed gear transmission 0-60 mph was achieved in a surprisingly quick 3.9 seconds with quarter mile times in the sub 13 second range, figures normally confined to high-performance Italian exotics. The Roadster, though small by production volume, set the course for the Tesla sedans and SUVs that dominate the market today. When production ended in 2012, just a few years after the release of the 2.0, approximately 2,500 Roadsters had been produced, making it one of the rarest of all Tesla model cars built.
History of This Car
This Tesla Roadster 2.0 was purchased new by the first owner and retained until 2017 accumulating 87,488 miles under first ownership. According to service documents accompanying the car, in 2019, this Tesla Roadster was given a 12k mile annual service performed at Tesla, Reno, NV including the installation of a gear selector button and push button switch. The current owner, a Senior Manufacturing Engineer at Tesla, had the car serviced in March 2024 at Tesla, Corte Madera, CA where it was given a general diagnostics inspection. Based on the inspection, a new Tesla 2.0 Power Electronics Module (PEM – 3 phase inverter assembly) was installed. Additional work included an AC freon charge, 2 lithium-ion coins, replacement of the rear TESLA lettering, and a brake fluid flush. The current condition includes full charge readings indicating 133 mile range, consistent with proper performance based on good battery health.
General Condition
Today this Tesla Roadster presents as an excellent example of one of the most exciting and innovative sports cars ever assembled. Finished in deep Racing Green, the finish is in excellent condition with no significant cosmetic flaws to the exterior surfaces though rocker and lower body panel speckling is evident consistent with accumulated miles. All glass, clear front and rear lenses, and exterior body trim are in excellent cosmetic condition including the beautiful lighting and plastic lens enclosures. The body is free from major blemishes and all openings function as new, with excellent closure, proper panel gapping, and crisp fit to the front and rear bumper caps. The windshield, rear, and side glass are also in excellent condition. The optional alloy wheels wear a set of Yokohama Advan Neova 225/45 R17 tires. The carbon fiber roof band is a rare and desirable feature to the Targa design with fixturing that holds the soft Targa roof in place when stretched across the open canopy and affixed to the windshield header.
Inside the car, the distinctive tan leather interior exhibits handsome finishes indicating proper care over the near 90k miles accumulated since new. All interior components have been properly maintained including the digital and analog instruments in the central binnacle, the carbon fiber entry door thresholds, and the sculpted leather seats which offer excellent support for sport driving and surprising comfort for long range cruising. Every aspect of the interior is handsomely appointed and well-cared for from the pushbutton transmission selectors to the power window controls, all features operate smoothly and correctly.
The rear storage area continues with an exemplary presentation offering factory finishes, while the front area reveals excellent packaging for the cooling fans and electronic systems. The undercarriage of the car displays no significant road marks on the factory aerodynamic chassis pans. Suspension and various exposed components revealed in the underside reflect condition consistent with accumulated mileage, displaying honest finishes to the factory suspension components.
Driving the Tesla Roadster is an electrifying experience. Power can be gently progressive or rapidly delivered with shocking results. With no exhaust note to speak of, power comes on in a rush with 60 mph arriving in mere seconds. Despite the “ohm my goodness” performance, the cabin is spacious even for taller drivers. The seating is comfortable, refreshing AC blows cold even with the roof removed, handy controls are easy to use, and an impressive sound system offers very enjoyable driving even on an otherwise average commute. Every aspect of performance is well served and enjoyably so, especially while passing fueling stations with the convenience of quickly replenishable charging at home or through a network of available Tesla charging stations throughout North America.
