2014 Morgan 3-Wheeler
VIN: SA9M32859EP202174
Sport Green with Saddle Brown Leather

Morgan's famously anachronistic sports cars represent the quintessential British motoring experience. Seen as outmoded even by the 1960s, the cars have actually been developed considerably over the decades, creating an interesting combination of contemporary mechanical components and the traditional British sports car experience and aesthetic. With that philosophy, Morgan has remained a stalwart corner of motoringdom, where true, dyed in the wool anglophile enthusiasts could be assured of an unadulterated, uncompromised, motoring experience. In a Morgan, these enthusiasts are guaranteed a thrilling and very pure driving experience that instantly reminds the driver of times when just going for a drive was an occasion.

Until recently, this brand of good old fashioned motoring was provided by Morgan’s Plus 8 (and later V6 roadster) and Plus 4 models, but in a rather clever bit of new product planning, Morgan expanded their model line meaningfully for the first time in more than 40 years with the introduction of the three-wheeler in 2012. Three-wheeled vehicles have always been subject to fewer regulations relating to safety and emissions, and for a small company like Morgan, this is particularly appealing because it keeps the normally crippling development costs of a new model line down. For consumers, these vehicles are also cheaper to tax and register, which is why Morgan originally began by building three wheeled vehicles in 1911 (and did so until 1952). Thus, with the three-wheeler, Morgan could bring a new product to market at a lower development cost but was still true to the aesthetic and heritage that defines Morgan, creating a truly compelling three-wheeled vehicle instead of the peculiar and confused offerings like the Can-Am Spyder or Polaris Slingshot.

The Morgan is an absolute riot. With more than 100 foot pounds of torque delivered to the single rear wheel (via a 5-speed Mazda Miata gearbox and belt drive) and a curb weight in the region of 1200 pounds, it is hugely thrilling. The large displacement V-twin is about as characterful as engines come, and the result is a vehicle that it’s impossible to pilot without smiling. The vintage aesthetic and the inherent tendency to take life less seriously aboard a three-wheeled vehicle opens the cars up to a wide array of customization options that Morgan is more than happy to accommodate, all the way from a World War II fighter inspired bolide to a sophisticated design statement trimmed with quilted leather. The three-wheeler is, plain and simple, about the joy of motoring and for car enthusiasts the world over, it’s reassuring to know that there are hardcore petrol heads making and buying these cars.

The few who do buy these extraordinary vehicles are in for a treat. The three-wheeler operates like a car but the experience is rather similar to a motorcycle, from the elemental exposure to the noise and vibration of the engine. It attracts admiration and attention wherever it goes, and this particular example has further cheekiness supplied by the P40 Warhawk Flying Tigers style graphics from World War II, which are vinyl and can be removed should the new owner so desire. Aside from the playful graphics, this three-wheeler is sophisticated in its finishes, from the British Racing Green paintwork with cognac leather interior to the beautifully detailed aviation style instruments, which bear similarity to a Bell & Ross timepiece.

The condition is excellent throughout as one would expect for a relatively new vehicle that has covered only a few hundred miles. There is some blueing to the exhaust manifolds, minor soiling, and some light swirls to the paintwork but it is otherwise very difficult to distinguish this example from new. Morgan builds a low volume of these cars and they tend to be quite difficult to find. This example is in nearly new condition and is available now.

Morgans have always enjoyed a rabid following and the three-wheeler makes it easy to see why. For decades, the Morgan has represented the soul of an old car in a new car, and the three-wheeler takes it to the next level. It’s a highly visceral, emotional experience, in which refinement, storage space, weather protection, Bluetooth, and traction control have no business entering the equation. Instead, you get unadulterated motoring entertainment, a virtually endless supply of smiles and the affirmation that the joy is not in the destination but in the journey.
