After the war, the plentiful bounty of left-over prewar cars made for inexpensive hot rodding fun using 1930s era cars, building the very genesis of the iconic American Hot Rod. History and Build Details of This Car

This 1934 Ford Cabriolet Hot Rod was the subject of a careful build commissioned by a previous owner. It is estimated that the build was completed around 2017 and by 2019 had accumulated 638 miles when it was sold to the current consigning owner who has since added approximately 800 miles to the car now indicating 1,488 miles on the odometer.

The all-steel body features a nicely raked stance, lowered body position and lower fender drop. The rake is enhanced by “Big and Little” polished alloy Billet Specialties wheels wearing Nitto 255/45 ZR20 rear and 215/40 ZR17 front tires installed in 2023. Build photos accompanying the car show a solid original 34 as the starting point with all body panels removed from the frame, stripped to bare metal, primed and finished with 2-stage red paint. The frame was fortified with tubular steel structural members, independent rear suspension with onboard ventilated disc brakes were installed along with independent coil over front suspension, upper and lower tubular A-arms, dual piston caliper power-assisted disc brakes, and braided stainless brake lines. A new power steering rack was installed along with a new steering column, new stainless-steel exhaust, and all new fuel and electrical. A 302 V8 was built mated to a 4-speed automatic transmission with Ford “Metric” overdrive. Additional features include a polished aluminum intake manifold, a single Edelbrock 4bbl carburetor, MSD Blaster SS ignition, Auto Road aluminum radiator with electric fan, Ford Racing chrome plated valve covers, braided stainless-steel lines, and coated tubular exhaust headers. A contemporary Vintage Air system was installed and operates via a single wide-band serpentine belt with controls on a custom aluminum dash plate with rotating knobs.

The interior was designed and finished by veteran hot rod interior specialist Paul Atkins. The interior features high-quality tan leather throughout including a contoured power adjustable bench seat, embossed door panels, with polished trim and hand crank window handles, a sideways floor-mounted e-brake matching carpet, and matching bench seat for the rumble seat area. The dash is finished with matching red color, trimmed with Classic Instrument gauges, and finished with polished aluminum oval dash vents for air conditioning. A tall gear selector is floor mounted for the 4-speed automatic. A modern iteration of the traditional Ford banjo steering wheel is finished with a matching red rim and polished aluminum center and spokes.

Over the past six years under current ownership the car has been serviced at Moraga Motors including AC service, fluids, cooling system services, and other items as needed. In 2020 the car was serviced at Moal Inc. Oakland, CA including rebuilding the brakes, improving the rear suspension trailing links, new exhaust header gaskets, AC test-charge, and extensive detailing for the engine and underside features. In December 2023, the front portion of the car was damaged requiring $55k worth of professional repairs. The work was performed to a high standard as represented in the current condition.
