General History

Rarely in automobile design does beauty, engineering, and race history converge in an object so delightful, so perfect in every respect, it transcends generations of admirers. The Jaguar E-Type is such a car. Unveiled at the 1961 Geneva Motor Show, the brilliant and stunning design offered unrivaled performance, beauty, and a surprisingly affordable price. The E-Type has since grown to iconic status where it continues to command attention from collectors and enthusiasts worldwide. But it isn’t beauty alone that continues to win so many hearts. Jaguar engineering offered independent front and rear suspension, disc brakes all around (inboard at the rear to reduce unsprung weight), and their legendary twin-cam inline-6 engine. Sales were brisk as the series evolved over time, with continued interest for more than a decade. Today the very best early Series 1 examples command premium values particularly for cars that retain their factory original drivetrain, are finished in original factory colors, and have been restored to the highest possible level.

History of this Example

This Jaguar roadster restoration was commissioned by the current owner who engaged Hall Fabrication & Racing, Benicia, CA to perform a cost-no-object restoration to the highest standards. The restoration began in 2012 spanning 3 years with completion in 2015. In preparation for the restoration new parts were sourced for the project including a new windshield, new exterior trim parts, tail light lenses, and other details. While the car was completely disassembled and prepared for body and paint, the engine and transmission were removed and the front frame disassembled. Parts needing replating were sent out to vendors while other chrome parts were purchased as needed. For body work, the left lower valance was straightened, weld repairs performed under the hood nose, undercoating was removed, inside nose panels removed, and all metal parts set up for acid cleaning including the disassembled hood and inner parts. Body panels were finished with Polane and two coats of Imron while other selected parts were selectively shot with two coats of DP90LF, DX54 road guard applied to appropriate areas, and hardware finished with DX579 and DX520 SG.

The engine was disassembled, cleaned, and all parts prepped for machining and final finishing including machining and polishing the matching numbers head in preparation for the engine rebuild. The original twin-cam head is mounted to a 4.2L engine block (7R5081-9) selected for improved durability and performance. While the engine and transmission were out, the interior was also removed, and both left and right front floor panels were replaced as well as the left side of the rear floor panel. A new trunk floor panel was also installed including fresh seal sealer. Remaining floor areas were welded where necessary and treated for rust including hardware for the seat frames which were also rebuilt and refinished. The remaining floor areas were addressed including foot boxes and side panels with rust inhibitor installed along with new sound insulation. As the project progressed, additional new items were purchased including a new wiring harness, new dashboard switches, interior trim, hardware, and other detailed features.

As the engine was in the rebuild process, the carburetors were rebuilt, new porcelain manifolds were purchased, new stainless-steel exhaust with chrome finishers purchased, and new hardware for the engine reassembly purchased and finished where specialty coatings were deemed necessary. As all suspension had been removed during the body and paint process, each suspension part was refinished and new suspension bushings installed along with new fuel and brake lines to match the rebuilt brake calipers and discs as well as new clutch and brake master cylinders. The final assembly of the new interior, convertible top, all gauges, and the rebuilt engine and transmission were completed and installed concluding with road testing and refinement, tune up and new fluids in Feb. 2015, with adjustments performed as needed. Services continued with Burlingame Motors, Burlingame, CA in 2015 and 2018 for brake fluid flush and hose replacement, while general fluid services were performed as part of private collection maintenance while under current ownership.

Current Condition

Today, this Jaguar roadster presents in beautiful black and tan with excellent cosmetics throughout. The black finish offers deep luster and gloss throughout all surfaces and the inner strike surfaces, door jambs, and underside panels have been finished to a high level of quality. The chrome features are brilliant and fresh featuring excellent fit to the body lines using correctly trimmed gaskets. The passenger side of the hood at the cowl sits slightly proud of the cowl line though this may be due to stiff rubber in this area. The beautifully finished hood and stainless-steel fender part line trim, script, lighting, emblems, and details are all finished with jewel-like precision. Contrasting the black finish, a set of chrome wire wheels are shod with BF Goodrich Silvertown white wall tires and finished with correct dual ear knockoffs.

The interior is in excellent condition having been completely reupholstered with correct leather and trim, excellent quality carpeting, and a pristine dashboard, all of which include correct alloy dash panels, correct hardware, correct seat foam and piping, and properly trimmed carpeting precisely fit to show standards. Finishes throughout the interior are once again spectacular including a pair of matched tan seatbelts with vintage buckles. Instruments are crystal clear with contrasting dials and precise needles, the dashboard materials are both accurate and exceptionally fine in fit and finish, and the seat contours are correct in piping, foam liner, and material fit. The interior has an exceptionally fine appearance which is further fortified by the correctly lined black canvas convertible top.

Restoration excellence continues in the beautifully finished engine compartment. All details and components have been prepared as originally intended, once again reflective of the very best in quality and authenticity. The original engine head bears the matching stamped numbers consistent with the chassis plate and was mounted to a more robust 4.2 L block which was restored and rebuilt to correct specifications during restoration. Every aspect of the restoration including the porcelain exhaust headers, gold finished cam valley, correct hammer-tone finish airbox, and polished triple carburetors are exceptional in every respect. Linkages, radiator, hoses, even the washer bottle are all reflective of excellence. The trunk compartment is also properly finished in matching interior colors.

As one might expect, the undercarriage is in excellent condition. All finishes and components viewed in the undercarriage are similarly reflective of excellence both in the restoration and mechanical attention given to this fine car. The stainless-steel exhaust and angled chrome finishers are in excellent condition, the suspension components, fasteners and hardware are accurate, and the various hard and soft lines are all in excellent condition.

In addition to the beautiful cosmetics, this E-Type roadster runs and drives extremely well, starting easily and idling smoothly at rest. Tested and refined after the restoration was completed, the performance capabilities are in keeping with the high visual standards. The engine has great oil pressure, makes excellent power and torque, and pulls strong in all gears. The car tracks well and rides smoothly and freeway speeds are smooth with no cowl shudder and progressive acceleration delivering smiles with every accrued mile resting on the wood rimmed steering wheel and shifting the 4-speed gearbox.

Jaguar E-Type roadsters continue to be highly prized for their beauty and performance. Series 1 cars are further considered among the most desirable as originally conceived by Jaguar Motors more than 60 years ago. Combining dramatic colors, a cost-no-object restoration, and conscientious long-term collector ownership, this E-Type is sure to capture your admiration, delight, and dreams of sportscar motoring.
