General Overview

With its iconic shape and racing lineage, the lightweight and agile 356 Porsche continues to be sought after by enthusiasts and collectors for their unique design, robust engineering, versatile performance, and especially collectible was the Carrera 2 4 Cam cars such as represented here. The 356 came to market during Porsche’s rapid growth as a production car manufacturer and a formidable motorsports competitor. The ongoing development of the 356 included increased displacement for the 4-cylinder air-cooled engine, but the top-of-the-line offering was the legendary 4 Cam Carrera 2. By 1964, the 4 Cam was still offered, though very few were factory ordered. Combining 4-wheel disc brakes and front and rear independent suspension with torsion bars, the 130hp engine and 4-speed transmission delivered a potent package. Just 101 C-Series Carrera 2s were built, making the last of the 356 models highly desirable as one of the most sought after Porsches, exemplifying all the traits of the original design, combining rarity and exceptional performance.

History of this Carrera 2

According to copies of the Porsche Certificate of Authenticity and a copy of the Kardex accompanying this car, this Carrera 2 C was delivered May 15, 1964, finished in Irish Green and trimmed with black leatherette and mouse grey corduroy. The car was outfitted with ventilated steel wheels and Dunlop tires, electric windshield washer system, coco fiber floor mats in black, a Blaupunkt Radio ‘Frankfurt”, two speakers, antenna, signal horn, and safety belts.

The car was delivered to the first owner, Kurt Brenner, Laconia, MA via Porsche dealer Max Moritz of Reutlingen, Germany. Michael Simonhoff acquired the car in 1981, retaining it for over two decades before selling it in 2005 to marque specialist David Mohlman. Further prominent collectors enjoyed ownership before the current owner, a well-known collector and Porsche enthusiast, purchased the car in 2012. Under current ownership, this Carrera 2 has enjoyed proper care and the very best in mechanical attention provided by Andial.

In addition to the ongoing care and service for this car, in 2023, the current owner commissioned a comprehensive engine rebuild performed by four-cam expert Jim Ansite. The engine rebuild included Viton valve seats, valve job, new valves, springs, guides, coated bearings, ductile iron seat, keeper seats, and retainers, a complete Carrera 2 gasket set, correct Carrera distributor cap and rotor (T-drive, spring, and hardware), four cylinder balance job, C2 Carrillo mag rods, 8mm - .050 steel bead lock, and new flywheel. In preparation for assembly, the cam timing was set up and then the engine disassembled for final assembly, the bottom end was cleaned, bottom end and crank assembled, pistons and cylinders cleaned and installed, installed air deflectors, installed lock tabs in heads, heads torqued, final cam timing performed, valve adjusters and cam flywheels installed, V-drive installed, oil fittings, oil sump screen and plate installed, rebuilt generator installed, and the tach drive and valve covers installed. Upon completion, the engine was dyno tested new exhaust tips and exhaust shield matting were installed, Additionally, while the engine was removed and being rebuilt, the gearbox was rebuilt with new intermediate bearings, new main and carrier bearings, new pinion shaft bearing, new 1st-4th 356 synchro rings, a new 741 2B 2nd gear, and a 356 4th gear 28:21, 0.750 4TG1 installed.

In addition to the extensive engine and gearbox work, exterior chrome was removed and re-plated, refinished, and new cad plating performed on several parts. At the same time the engine tin was refinished, and engine fan housing finished and installed along with finished air cleaners, new fuel lines, and rain trays. Total cost for work performed in 2023 on the engine, gearbox, cad and chrome plating, and other various cosmetic and mechanical details totaled more than $90k.

Having been previously displayed at the 356 Club of Southern California Concours d’Elegance, Dana Point, CA, this Carrera 2 C scored 220.8 out of a possible 225 points as judged in the Street Carrera Class. In addition to the correct matching numbers engine and transmission (documented by the Kardex and Porsche CoA), the hood and engine lid are both stamped with the correct and corresponding last digits of the chassis number.

Condition and Presentation

Today this beautiful Porsche 356 Carrera 2 C presents in excellent condition throughout. The Irish Green paint has smooth coverage, excellent overall gloss, and consistent coverage. The body panels are properly finished with excellent panel gaps, proper fit, and crisp closures. The body colored front and rear bumpers are also in excellent condition including the unique under bumper Carrera 2 vented rear valance with dual exit exhaust and chrome finishers and the non-grille trimmed front intakes indicative of the Carrera 2 version accommodating the front mounted oil cooler. Both the hood and engine lid retain their correct last digit numbers which match the chassis stamping indicating these key parts are the original factory body panels assembled with this Carrera 2. The chrome and polished finishes are excellent overall including a set of chrome plated wheels wearing a set of Michelin 165 HR 15 tires. The overall exterior presence is impressive down to the unique gold Carrera front fender and rear script which are the only visible clues revealing the rare and desirable performance equipment powering this 356 Porsche Carrera 2.

The interior is exceptionally fine with attention to detail at every corner. Having scored a 59.8 out of a possible 60, the interior could very well be considered perfect. The overall interior composition is both visually cohesive and accurate with a beautifully finished dash and steering wheel combination. The seats, dash pad, door panels, factory steering wheel, beautifully finished gauges with crisp numeric indication, correct knobs, window winders, and door handles delight the eye. The dashboard is not only a superb example of the last of the 356 series, the 4-speed manual gear selector, Irish Green dash fascia, Carrera 2 wood rimmed steering wheel, and colored crest center horn ring create a total composition of design excellence and rarity seldom seen even in premier restorations. Additionally, this car is also outfitted with an optional gas heater.

The engine compartment is correctly finished and adorned with exceptionally fine and rare details unique to the Carrera four-cam engine. Every detail remains in excellent condition with only mild evidence of use since this car achieved the award-winning recognition it rightly earned with 220.8 out of 225 possible points for its class, including scoring 59.2 out of a possible 60 for the engine compartment. Features of the four-cam include twin Solex PII-4 carburetors with correct and uniquely constructed air cleaners, unique heads, and specialized features only available on the Carrera 2. The front storage compartment is correctly presented, consistent with the rest of the car including a spare wheel, factory stamping for the chassis, and a corresponding aluminum manufacturers plate bearing the same chassis number further support the documentation included with this Carrera 2. The underside of the car is in excellent condition revealing the correct matching numbers four-speed transaxle, Koni shock absorbers, four-wheel ATE disc brakes, correct exhaust, and correct cam covers. There are no signs of structural compromise to the floor or suspension support structures, all of which are in excellent condition consistent with the integrity of the restoration. A modern Facet electric fuel pump has been discreetly mounted to the chassis.

This Carrera 2 starts, runs, and drives as one might expect from a superbly presented example of the last of the historically important 356 model run. The gearbox has smooth operation with just the right “feel” to the shift linkage and great pull from the four-cam when heading to higher rpm. The vastly improved disc brakes bring the car down evenly from highway speeds and add to the enjoyment of driving this Carrera 2 even in modern traffic. With the added four-cam power and wider rev range, this Carrera 2 is a pleasure to drive, show, or enjoy on weekend Porsche touring events.

With just 101 examples built, documented owners, beautiful factory colors, and an award-winning restoration, this Carrera 2 is ready to deliver the next fortunate enthusiast a unique and enduring ownership experience.
