History of the Ferrari 275 GTB/4 and NART Spyder

Conceived and developed more than half a century ago, the Ferrari 275 GTB/4 still retains its unchallenged position as one of the greatest sports cars ever produced. First launched as the 275 GTB, the stunning Pininfarina body came to life through its powerful V12 engine. The updated GTB/4, with quad-cam heads, took it one step further with an unforgettable blend of power and beauty – the pinnacle of the golden age of sports cars. The 275 GTB/4 would go on to become a monumental Ferrari, unleashing the future of Ferrari performance engines, while standing firmly against competitors as a spectacularly conceived front engine V12 supercar.

Building from the perfectly proportioned long-nose two-cam 275 GTB, Scaglietti added a central bulge to the bonnet highlighting the 3.3-liter tipo 226 engine which featured twin double-overhead-cam heads, dry sump lubrication, 9.5:1 compression, an impressive lineup of six Weber 40DCN carburetors, and a 5-speed transaxle. The free-revving quad-cam engine developed 300 bhp with monstrous low-end torque and dramatically improved overall usability. Luigi Chinetti, keen to bring a convertible version of this car to market, ordered 25 examples to be built by Scaglietti. With Enzo Ferrari's approval, Egidio Brandoli, Scagliettis primary craftsman, completed 10 of the 25 proposed spyders. Chinetti marketed and sold all 10 spyders under the name NART (North American Racing Team). Fifty years later each of these original examples have since become eight-figure sports cars in today's market.

History of this Ferrari Scaglietti/Brandoli Spyder

According to the Massini report prepared by Ferrari Historian Marcel Massini, this 275 GTB/4 (chassis #10917) was originally delivered as a coupe finished in Silver-grey Metallic and sold to the first owner in France. By 197o it was repainted yellow and again in dark blue metallic when the engine was removed and another similar GTB/4 engine installed. That same year, the car was involved in an accident on the Normandy Motorway. The damaged car was sold four years later in 1974 to Bernard Bonoron, France. With 10917 having been damaged primarily in the forward portion of the car, Bonoron elected to remove the rear portion of 10917, fitting it to his two-cam 275, which then surrendered the rear of the two-cam back to 10917. The two rear body sections now swapped, 10917 was then sold to Mr. Mirabail, who retained another 275 GTB/4 powered by the original engine from 10917, which he then at least temporarily reunited with the car. Subsequent changes in ownership continued including licensing in France and Italy when, in 1980, the car was sold to an Italian owner. In 1983, the car arrived at Carrozzeria Egidio Brandoli of Montale, Modena, Italy, owned and operated by the original builder of the 10 NART Spyders; Egidio Brandoli. Under commission, Brandoli performed the same coachbuilding methods used in the original construction, transforming the car to NART Spyder specifications just as he had done with the 10 original cars when working with Scaglietti.

Over the next thirty years, 10917 would enjoy dedicated ownership eventually arriving in North America to the current owner who purchased this beautiful spyder in 2011. Shortly after purchase, the current owner embarked on a four-year search eventually locating the original engine in 2015. That same year, the current owner commissioned a rebuild for the original engine and 5-speed transaxle performed by Ferrari V12 engine specialists. The engine compartment was freshened and the correct matching number V12 engine reunited to #10917 where it remains today. Over the past decade, the current owner has tended to the car with regular fluid services, cosmetic detailing, and occasional motoring to ensure proper operation and performance.

Current Condition

Today this rare Ferrari presents as a beautiful, dramatic, and stunning example, particularly in the elegant Verde Pino finish. The paint offers a deep fluid gloss, excellent luster, and evenly distributed metallic coverage throughout all surfaces. Excellent panel presentation throughout the handmade bodywork further supports the fine craftsmanship achieved during the restoration and coachwork by the original coachbuilder, formerly at Scaglietti. The exterior trim, emblems and chrome details are excellent throughout including proper finishing inside the door jambs and inner strike surfaces. All openings function as expected with tight closures and excellent panel gaps circling the perimeter of the floating hood, curvaceous doors, and sculpted Kamm-back trunk unique to the Spyder design. Four correctly sized and visually stunning Borrani RW 4039 alloy Borrani wire wheels with chrome plated knockoffs are in place wearing a set of correct Michelin XWX 205 VR15 tires.

The interior is simply breathtaking. Unlike the coupe body, the Spyder interior can be more fully appreciated with no roof concealing the hand stitched leather finishes contrasting the Verde Pino exterior. The contoured bucket seats are correctly pleated, trimmed with perimeter piping, and a set of Irvin seat belts are fitted for both occupants. The black dashboard is purposeful and refined with a commanding array of instruments featuring crisp numeric indication, excellent color, and perfectly trimmed details. The leather center console offers just enough space for a pair of driving gloves, passports, and tickets to La Traviata. The carpet and floor mats are in excellent condition as is the inner headliner for the canvas convertible top. The quintessential Ferrari crested wood rim Nardi steering wheel with polished aluminum spokes is paired with the gated 5-speed manual transaxle gear selector, heralding the interior in classic Ferrari style. The trunk is in excellent condition with proper beaded carpet and a correct fuel filler cap, Under the removable floor panel, a spare 4039 Borrani wire wheel with matching Michelin XWX tire is held in place with the proper hardware.

The engine bay and matching numbers engine have been properly detailed revealing ample evidence of expert attention throughout the restoration and ongoing professional care of this spyder. Engine finishes are correctly applied, accurately specified, with a focus on originality as directed by the dedicated servicing and thoughtful detailing performed over the years. Engine components are faithfully presented including proper wiring, correct ignition and electrical components, yellow fuel lines, Magneti Marelli battery, factory washer bag, and other original details. Beautiful Weber 40 DCN/9 carburetors are handsomely finished with twelve polished and screened velocity stacks adding a competition touch in a nod to the NART racing team history. The underside of the car is in keeping with the beautiful workmanship performed throughout the restoration reflecting finishes, features, and details worthy of concours excellence including correct exhaust, ANSA quad exhaust tips, alloy engine and gearbox castings, Koni shock absorbers, and correct Dunlop brakes.

Driving this Ferrari 275 GTB/4 Spyder is confirmation of the power, performance, and presence of this series enhanced by the added pleasure of open-air driving. There is simply no comparison to the sound of the V-12 engine as the quartet of cams deliver mechanical harmony, sonorous exhaust, and peak performance delivered to occupants of the open cockpit. The 5-speed synchromesh gearbox offers excellent gear spacing while the four-wheel disc brakes operate very well, modulating smoothly and tracking evenly. The driving experience is well balanced due in part to the fully independent front and rear suspension and wide powerband. When summoned to highway speeds, the cams come on song and the Webers open up almost as widely as your broadened smile.

This Ferrari 275 GTB/4 Spyder is offered with a copy of the Massini report, records supporting the engine rebuild, service records under current ownership, a tool roll and set of tools, a car cover, a display placard, a Ferrari assembly data and overhaul instructions book, reproduction owner’s manuals, and spare parts catalog.
