General Overview
Combining classic looks with superb road manners, the Porsche 911 has become one of the most celebrated sports cars in automotive history. The first 911 arrived in the US in 1965, offering agile performance at a modest price. With the impressive 6-cylinder engine, the 911 was both powerful and agile on the road. In addition to the 5-speed manual, a handful of these cars were outfitted from the factory with the Sportomatic automatic transmission.
In production for three years, 1968 would be the last year Porsche utilized hand finishing during assembly. 1968 911T/Base Coupe production resulted in just over 1600 cars produced. By 1969 this number jumped to over 4100 (911T Coupes), more than double the volume due to automated processes. 1968 was also the transition year to the long wheelbase chassis which shortened production while retooling for the 1969 models. The 911S was not offered in the US, due to increasing emissions standards. Only the 911T and 911L were offered in the US. Though already a remarkable offering for the times, Porsche developed ongoing enhancements and improvements each year through the 70s and 80s and into the next century, making the 911 one of the most successfully sustained platforms in the sports car world – a legacy of performance excellence that has continued for more than 70 years.
History of This Car
This 911 was delivered to the first owner finished in Slate Gray with black interior and outfitted with L series vented rear disc brakes. One of just 464 examples delivered new with the Sportomatic automatic transmission, the car remained with the first owner, a resident of Newport Beach, who purchased the car from Bill Yates Porsche, San Juan Capistrano, CA. The first owner enjoyed the car for thirteen years before passing away. His widow kept the car virtually untouched in their Newport Beach garage until selling it to the second owner in 1996, a private collector and resident of Costa Mesa, CA. The current and third owner, a resident of Los Gatos, CA purchased this car in 2016 spending the next decade restoring the car to a very high level, putting only 1,000 miles on the car since his purchase.
Under current ownership, this Porsche 911 was thoughtfully restored with attention given equally to both mechanical operation and cosmetic presentation. The body was stripped and all glass removed to reveal a well-preserved chassis which benefited from the mild California climate. The body work was performed by Robert Fessler (former owner of Caliber Collision, Sunnyvale, CA) which included replacing the front suspension pan and replacing both outer rocker panels, and even though the trailing edges of the front fenders had only minor rust at the bottom, they were replaced using correct steel fenders. The hood, engine lid, and bumpers were also replaced to ensure there was no rust or filler, all of which were replaced using correct steel parts. The left door was also replaced with a 1967 door as the original had minor rust bubbles at the forward bottom edge.
With the body work and prep completed, correct Porsche Slate Gray Glasurit paint was applied by Alex Rangle of Custom Paint Finish, Santa Clara, CA. As most of the parts on the car were in such excellent original condition, restoration was limited to careful cleaning and refinishing with OEM parts used when needed. All soft parts including rubber, weatherstripping, and rubber gasket materials were supplied by top tier vintage Porsche specialists including OEM seat covers front and rear, new headliner, carpet, and correct replacements for the top and bottom dashboard materials. For the remaining details of the interior, the package tray was recovered, new door seals installed, and the gauges were cleaned, rebuilt, and tested including rebuilding the clock with a quartz movement.
Having benefited from a comprehensive engine rebuild performed by Chick Iverson approximately 60k miles ago, the engine was in excellent operating condition and thus only needed resealing, new chain ramps and hydraulic tensioners, and rebuilding for the original Weber carburetors, performed by Pierce Manifolds. For shifting duties, the engine was mated to a 1966 Porsche 5-speed manual transmission (rebuilt 25k miles ago) which was installed along with a new flywheel and clutch (Sportomatic spare transmission included with the car). Additional work performed on the car included the installation of 1967 911S Koni suspension with adjustable dampening front and rear, comprehensively rebuilt by Performance Shock and Elephant Racing, powder coated adjustable trailing arms and spring plates, rebuilt rear hubs (all performed by Elephant Racing), and factory front sway bar. A set of correct date coded 15 x 5.5 Fuchs wheels were installed and aligned by Custom Alignment, and the L series disc brakes were rebuilt by PMB. The current owner has enjoyed this car for the past decade retaining California title on the original black and yellow license plates.
Condition Overview
Remarkably fine and superbly presented, this 911 offers beautiful finishes throughout. The elegant and understated Slate Gray finish is glossy, smooth, and gracefully applied over the iconic 911 body. The door jambs and other inner body surfaces display excellent paint finish, and the rubber, weather stripping, and trim are all properly installed per factory standards. The hood and engine lid open and shut per factory standards, displaying consistent dimensions and fit. The doors open and shut with precision, offering that distinctive Porsche “ping” resonating the quality of original factory construction. The rubber bumper trim, various plated parts, Sekurit windshield, side and rear branded glass, and distinctive 911 features are all in excellent condition. The chrome is excellent throughout from the door handles and side glass trim to the taillight trim. The lighting, rear lenses, and side view mirror are also in excellent condition including the 911S emblem applied to the engine lid reflective of the upgrades the current owner added during the ten-year restoration. A set of correct original date coded Fuchs wheels are very nicely presented with proper finish, correct matching centers with embossed Porsche crest, and clean rim edges showing no significant marks or curb rash. A set of Pirelli P600 185/75 R15 radial tires are mounted. Two delightful finishing touches include a pair of rectangular fog lamps and the original black and yellow California license plate surrounded by a Chick Iverson license plate frame.
The beautifully restored interior is accurately finished in black leatherette with matching woven black vinyl door panels, dash, and rear seats. During the restoration, the interior was refinished with new carpeting, headliner, new OEM seat covers, and other soft materials, while the majority of the remaining items were restored or refinished as needed. The instruments, dial faces, and needles are in excellent condition with bright color dial faces, correct needles, and numeric indication reflective of the reconditioning performed on all gauges. The correct early series black rim steering wheel, functional AM/FM Blaupunkt radio with a new Porsche speaker and antenna, finished knobs and switches handsomely complete the interior features. Other details include the 5-speed floor shifter finished with a correct black shifter knob, correct woven black seat belts and polished clasps, and beautifully finished door hardware.
The engine compartment and front storage compartment are both reflective of careful and accurate restoration including the original 2.0 Liter 911 engine. The numbers matching engine is not only in excellent mechanical condition, it has also been restored with correct finishes, correct air intake box, correct original Weber carburetors, appropriate fittings and hardware, and original style components creating a remarkable overall presentation. The front storage compartment features a correct factory Fuchs spare wheel with a matching Pirelli tire, proper finishes, a correct single strike VIN stamping on the spare tire tub deck, matching chassis number on the aluminum chassis tag, and correct material lining the front storage area.
The undercarriage is clean and sound, displaying nicely finished ventilated disc brakes with correct brake calipers, correct exhaust, heat exchangers, and muffler. The undercarriage, engine and gearbox casings, lines, and suspension details have been restored to the same high standards as the rest of the car including the upgraded 911S suspension, Koni shocks, and selectively powder coated suspension components. The quality of the underside is further supported by known California ownership since delivered new.
