General Overview
The 911, originally revealed in the fall of 1963 at the Frankfurt Motor Show, was the much-heralded replacement for the highly successful 356. The 911 arrived with more power, more comfort, and a favorable price when compared against comparable cars of the period. But Porsche worried about losing customers due to the higher priced six-cylinder models. To meet that need, the 912 four-cylinder models were added to the lineup.
Given the anticipated success of the 911/912 lineup a convertible model for the American market was key. Efforts were made to build a convertible variant, but the Porsche team worried the US would exclude fully open cars for road use. Thus, entered the “Targa” design. Allowing open-air motoring while retaining body rigidity and safety, both the 911 and 912 Targa became a hit with US buyers, arriving in 1967, first with a removable soft back window and later as standard wrap-around rear glass by 1969.
General Overview of This Example
This Porsche was purchased by the current owner in 2006. According to the prior owner, she stated the car had always been located in the Sacramento, CA area and that she was the fourth owner of the car. Under prior ownership, Ted Blake rebuilt the original engine, which he confirmed with the current owner, though no invoice is included for the rebuild.
Shortly after his purchase, the current owner purchased 930 front suspension components, lowered the front stance, and installed a 911S front valance as well as fog lights using correct mounts through the front air vents (original vents included with the car). Originally delivered with chrome wheels, the car was later fitted with Fuchs wheels and upgraded with a modern radio. Though equipped with dealer installed air conditioning, most of the system has been removed, though components were retained and are included with the car as spares.
Service documents accompanying this car include 2009 bump steer spacer installation, front toe alignment, fuel tank sender replaced 2014, new battery, fuel hose, new battery cable, and oil service 2015, and comprehensive service in 2024 at Porsche Monterey including: spark plugs, drive belt, ignition cap and rotor, air filter, wheel bearing adjustment, and both Solex carburetors rebuilt with hoses and gaskets replaced.
General Condition
Today this Porsche 912 Targa presents as a driver level example with recent paint and interior work that elevates the overall visual presentation. The exterior finish is glossy and smooth, rubber trim is in very good condition, and various details are also nicely finished. The doors, hood, and deck lid all open and shut well with generally good panel gaps. The current owner reports that both doors and front fenders were treated to rust repair at the bottom sections, properly finished, and painted to match. The side and rear glass retain the Sekurit band etches indicative of original glass. The emblems, lenses, and various trim are in very good condition. The Fuchs wheels are in generally good condition wearing a matching set of Bridgestone P205/60 R15 radial tires. A pair of fog lamps are mounted through the chrome plated front vents. The overall exterior presentation is satisfying and reflective of a car that can be enjoyably used with further freshening to enhance details as desired.
The interior appears to be largely original with a few upgrades to enhance driving. A pair of Scheel seats, a newer Porsche steering wheel is in place, a contemporary Pioneer stereo unit is installed, and the door cards have been converted to door pull loops. Of note, the original air conditioning vents and controls are still in place and in excellent condition. The rear seating, headliner, and rear side panels display finishes and materials consistent with preserved factory original Porsches. The gauges are in very good visual condition, retaining good function, contrasting dial faces, and clear lenses, though the top of the dashboard is sun damaged and has surface cracks.
Beneath the engine lid, the matching numbers engine and engine compartment reflect an honest combination of originality and preservation. The engine bay and engine have been mechanically addressed but not restored, retaining a moderate patina that appears consistent with unrestored original Porsches of this vintage. The Solex carburetors were recently rebuilt and under current ownership, tuned, and adjusted in preparation for consignment.
The front storage compartment is in excellent visual condition including correct fabric material for the inner fenders and floor. Under the covering, an original date coded 10/68 steel spare wheel, a correct cover for the smuggler’s compartment, and both the wheel tub stamping and aluminum chassis plate display original numbers matching the Kardex. The underside of the car is reflective of general use original construction and no significant compromise to the chassis or suspension mounting points.
The car starts, runs, and drives well. The engine is properly sorted and any drivers familiar with vintage Porsches will delight in the smooth idle and progressive acceleration this Porsche 912 delivers. Suspension, steering, and brakes are all consistent with standards of this era, gently enhanced by the 930 front suspension upgrades. The 5-speed gearbox operates smoothly with good synchros and the brakes work well. In all, the driving manners are quite nice and well-balanced.
This is a very complete, documented, matching numbers Porsche 912 with driver level cosmetics ready to start the next chapter in ownership history. This handsome 912 will delight any Porsche enthusiast who enjoys driving and participating in local Porsche events.
