General Overview

Combining classic looks with superb road manners and drivability, the Porsche 911 has become one of the most celebrated sports cars in automotive history. The first 911 arrived in the US in 1965, offering agile performance at a modest price. Perfect for a wide range of uses, the 911 would become the most enduring model in Porsche’s history.

By 1973, the Porsche 911S was still considered the top performance offering. The later series cars (1972 and 1973), outfitted with 2.4-liter engines, remain today as the ultimate development of the 'long hood', thin-bumper 911. After 1973, the 911 faced heavy emissions restrictions and requirements, significantly hampering performance and reliability. For 1973, the high performance “S” delivered 190 hp at 6,500 rpm and the improved 915 transaxle replaced the 2.2L 901 dog-leg transaxle. This combination resulted in a superb balance of power and handling while still retaining the classic 911 body.

History of This Car

According to the current owner, this rare 911S was owned by a Southern California resident who placed the car in long-term indoor storage. Recently emerged, European Collectables sourced the car for the current owner in 2020 who purchased it and continued to carefully recommission the car including sensitive blending of original interior and exterior finishes with refurbishment afforded to mechanical areas as needed. After the work was performed the car was documented with a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity prepared by Porsche Classic Technicians at the Porsche Classic Partner Porsche South Bay, January 2, 2020.

Built May 1973 and outfitted with a desirable power sunroof, the Porsche Certificate indicates this car was further optioned with Sport Seats, Blaupunkt radio, Koni shocks, factory chrome wheel arch moldings, and tinted glass. The certificate also indicates that both the engine and transmission numbers match Porsche internal records for this car. Under current ownership, this 911S has been mechanically serviced and cosmetic details freshened as needed. The original paint was in such good condition that the current owner selected thoughtful paint correction gently reconditioning the original black finish, respraying only the engine lid and right rear fender. The original interior was in excellent condition, so it was professionally cleaned, Sport Seats were reupholstered, a new headliner installed, and the remaining interior material features, thankfully preserved by dry indoor storage, were freshened and detailed.

Mechanical work included rebuilding the left front brake caliper, flushing the brake system, new fuel hoses and fuel pump, oil filter service and oil change, a new fuel level sender, gauge refinishing, service for the power sunroof, and a new set of Pirelli Cinturato 185/70VR15 tires.

Condition Overview

Today this rare 911S presents as a very well-preserved original car with recently performed restorative work selectively blended with the original features of this California car. The exterior finish is glossy and smooth with excellent luster from the factory black paint finish and selectively refinished engine lid and rear fender. The finish has been metered with a digital paint gauge indicating low single digit paint thickness on all panels with the exception of the engine lid and right rear panel which show higher thickness due to the professional paint application in these areas. The rubber trim is in excellent condition with some original pieces showing only moderate signs of age. The doors, hood, and deck lid all open and shut with that distinct Porsche sound reflective of expertly engineered original cars. Panel gaps are very good to excellent. The power sunroof has flush fit when closed, the various trim and emblems throughout the car are in very nice condition, and the chrome headlight trim, side view mirror, and door handles are also in very nice condition. The windshield, rear and side glass are in very good condition overall with no major marks of note. The original 15” Fuchs wheels are correctly finished with no notable rim edge damage. A set of correctly sized Pirelli Cinturato 185/70VR15 tires are installed. The car wears a set of age-appropriate California blue and gold license plates consistent with the year it was first sold.

The interior appears to be essentially original and sensitively restored as needed with the front Sport Seats reupholstered with cloth inserts and a correct, new headliner installed. The original door panels and rear seating display finishes and materials consistent with factory original Porsches. Instruments are in excellent visual condition overall with bright contrasting dial faces and clear lenses, benefiting from selective restoration work performed while under current ownership. An original Becker AM/FM radio is in place and a very nice black textured steering wheel fronts the black instrument panel.

Under the engine lid, the 2.4-Liter Porsche air-cooled engine presents in excellent condition. The single strike engine numbers *6331992* are confirmed in the Porsche CoA to match internal records. The engine and engine compartment finishes are confidently presented including the correct fuel-injection plenum and intake accessories, correct wiring and finishes, proper engine labels, and excellent detailing. The front storage compartment is in excellent condition and contains a matching Fuchs spare wheel. Both the aluminum Porsche factory VIN plate and the matching stamped front trunk tub bear the same chassis number. The underside of the car is in excellent condition overall. The alloy engine and transmission casings are in excellent condition as are the heat exchangers and various other details. The transmission casing is numbered 7730169, which is also confirmed to match internal records as stated in the Porsche CoA. Overall, the underside is finished to very high standards. In the interest of preservation, the chassis has not been restored, and as such, there is one isolated rust spot at the drain hole along the front cross member. There is no visual evidence of structural damage or metal panel replacement.

Driving this 911S is especially rewarding given the extra power offered from the S series engine. The 5-speed manual gearbox is smooth and perfectly matched to the power offered when accelerating in a more spirited manner. Throttle response is excellent, cornering guarantees a smile at every exit, and the tight and responsive steering makes even average trips a delight. Acceleration to freeway speeds brings revs up smoothly through all gears delivering that captivating 911 air-cooled sound further enhanced by the performance offered with electronic fuel-injection.

This is a very handsome double-black 911S boasting originality and recent thoughtful, selective restoration/preservation work professionally performed by Porsche specialists. This rare 911S is sure to delight any air-cooled Porsche enthusiast who recognizes the importance and lasting value of these premium performance sports cars.
