General History

Enjoying increased success in the new line of GT cars that evolved in the early 60s, Alfa Romeo released the first series 105/115 series coupes in 1963. Spanning a prolific 14 years in production, the model run remained largely unchanged due in part to the remarkably clean and sporting Giugiaro penned body design. As iterations unfolded, a range of engines evolved leading up to the SPICA fuel-injected 1750 GTV (Veloce) which was offered for US delivery examples. The potent 1,779cc engine was a fantastic pairing for the 5-speed manual gearbox which, along with revised suspension geometry and an anti-roll bar fitted to the rear suspension, made for great road manners. Larger front disc brakes and calipers were also installed. These notable improvements made for a better handling car overall but also invited spirited highway driving making the GTV a more refined and versatile GT car as it entered the new decade.

General Overview

This example was purchased by the current and consigning owner in August 2023. Accompanied by service records dating back to 2008, under prior ownership, the car was stripped to bare metal, body replacement panels installed as needed, corrosion mitigated before body prep, and refinished in the current shade of red. Additional work included adding a set of amber driving lights and custom-fabricated turn signal and marker lights. Invoices accompanying the car include numerous hours logged during restoration efforts, a Spruell Motorsports 2017 invoice for engine kit, camshafts, and other engine components, several Centerline International parts invoices, 2017 invoice for 4-piston front brake kit, and an Alderman Automotive Machine invoice covering machining work for the engine, 2017.

The 2.0L inline-four-cylinder twin cam engine is outfitted with dual Weber DCOE carburetors and was rebuilt in 2017 with high compression JE pistons, 85mm piston sleeves, oversized valves, high-lift camshafts, and titanium pins. Compression ratio is reported to be 10.5:1. The engine rebuild is supported by parts invoices included from Spruell Motorsport (Alfa Race/Street Performance Kit). During this time, the water pump and engine mounts were also replaced, the clutch assembly replaced, throw-out bearing, and secondary hydraulic cylinder installed along with a stainless-steel exhaust header.

Under more recent ownership, in 2019, an Alfaholics Fast Road Suspension Kit was installed (includes upgraded front and rear coil springs, an oversized front sway bar, and the elimination of the rear sway bar). Also under prior ownership, Koni adjustable shocks were installed at all four corners, Wilwood front brake calipers installed along with new rotors, pads, and hoses, and the rear brake calipers rebuilt.

In February 2024, under current ownership, Oliveria Engineering installed a new thermostat, new bleeder screw and temp gauge sender, and cam cover washers. Formerly fitted with aftermarket seats, Oliveria installed the original Alfa seats that accompanied the car. Additional work included valve adjustment, cam timing, checking all fluids, and hand brake adjustment.

General Condition

Today this Alfa Romeo offers satisfying driver+ level cosmetics including paint that has been generally well maintained showing good gloss and a satisfying finish. The paint shows some signs of age including hairline paint cracking at the driver’s door handle and typical paint chips at various points on the car, but otherwise, the finish is generally presentable for local shows. The trim is in generally good condition overall appearing original to the car with minor areas of age evident upon closer examination. The grille is very nice with good fit and the front bumper removed in keeping with the earlier series GTA competition aesthetic. A set of yellow lens lights are mounted inboard of the grille. The lenses, lighting, rear bumper, various trim, and script are in very good condition contributing to the overall cohesive visual presentation, once again essentially driver+ level. The panel gaps are consistent showing good closures and tight fit, even for both doors which show good part lines. The floating hood fits well and latches correctly. The glass is in very good condition with mixed brand Securit and Secursiv etching, consistent with original glass. Outfitted with a set of 15″ Rota wheels wearing 195/55 BFGoodrich G-Force Sport tires, the stance is low and purposeful, enhanced by the yellow Wilwood brake calipers peeking through the wide cast alloy spokes.

The interior features correct black bucket seats which appear to be original material and correct patterning. A set of Simpson vintage style seat belts are fitted to the front seats, adding to the competition theme of the build. Both seats are serviceable though the passenger seat has a few small holes resulting from an unfortunate incident involving the transport of a somewhat forgivable hot pasta casserole. Culinary distractions aside, the overall interior presents very well with most of the interior surfaces appearing in very good condition, displaying what appears to be largely original materials, with the exception of the molded aftermarket dash cap topping the dashboard. The instruments are clean and nicely detailed with excellent color and contrast, smooth wood-toned inserts for the dash and center console, and a wood rimmed steering wheel. A surprising feature is the Alfa Romeo branded AM/FM cassette stereo unit. The door panels, various chrome trim, and side panels are in good condition and the carpeting appears to also be in generally good condition, here too showing only modest signs of use. The trunk is clean and well-maintained, finished with a set of non-original type mats. Under the trunk floor, a full-sized spare tire is in place along with a contemporary 12V battery.

Under the hood, the engine bay delivers a generally correct presentation successfully combining classic Alfa ideals and welcomed performance enhancements. Nicely detailed, the polished aluminum twin-cam casting is very tidy, properly outfitted with braided stainless hoses feeding twin dual-throat Webers, and nicely detailed engine components. Overall, the engine compartment displays a purposeful presence suitable for local shows or Alfa club events. The undercarriage is representative of an unrestored example, with correct aluminum casting pans and transmission casings, Koni shocks, stainless steel headers and downpipes, newer rear axle straps, and other correct components for this series.

The car starts, stops, runs, and drives very capably as evidenced in the driving video accompanying the photos in the gallery. The twin Weber carburetors and spirited cams make for notable and delightfully usable added horsepower when compared to a factory Veloce. Not only is the power delivery impressive, the suspension and brake combination make this Alfa a very gratifying car for the enthusiast committed to the rewarding pleasures of spirited use. The gearbox is excellent with no synchro issues, the clutch takes up nicely, and the Wilwood four-piston front disc brakes bring the car down smoothly and evenly on a firm pedal. In every respect this Alfa is a genuine representative of how much fun a properly modified GTV can be.

Items Included with the Car

The car is accompanied by a pair of black cloth Cipher sport seats, two sets of keys, a 2000 GT Veloce owner’s manual, and a soft plastic case with tire changing tools.
