General History

Introduced in 1978, the SC moniker assigned to the 911 referenced the former performance variant of the 356. Lacking a Carrera version of the 911, the SC designation was assigned as “Super Carrera” and packed with the 3.0 liter Bosch injected engine and 915 5-speed manual transmission – a package that would prove to be among the most durable and iconic of the later series 911 models.

As the concurrently developed 928 was intended to be the replacement for the 911, Porsche was poised on making an historically important decision – to remove the 911 from future production. Thankfully for decades of enthusiasts, the 911 remained in production in part because the 911 had evolved very well during this period, with proven sales which continued to increase well beyond company expectations. Today these air-cooled manual transmission 911SCs continue to be sought after by collectors who appreciate these refined 911s not only for their driving manners but for the historic significance in sustaining the iconic 911 architecture for future collectors and enthusiasts to enjoy.

General Overview

This car has been under current ownership since May 2000 and appears to have remained in California since delivered new. Built in March 1979 and sold to the first owner on December 29, 1979, the original warranty voucher is stamped by Veale, Porsche Audi, Santa Rosa, CA, the authorized dealer. The car was outfitted from the factory with power windows, air conditioning, and sunroof, and later updated with Mahle – BBS black lace wheels. For the past 25 years, while under current ownership, the car has been enjoyed and driven sparingly particularly in recent years. In February 2001, the car was repainted in factory silver. In 2023, with 148,918 miles recorded on the service invoice, Gavin Autowerks, Oakland, CA serviced the power window switch, installed a clutch kit, new AC and alternator belts, and an oil filter. In October 2024, with 149,622 miles recorded, Porboys German Automotive, Pacheco, CA replaced the air pump, oil lines, air pump belt, changed the oil and filter, installed a new air filter, and performed a smog check. In preparation for sale, the shifter bushings and throttle bushing were replaced.

General Condition

Today with 149,846 miles indicated, this 911SC presents with a generally good exterior finish showing typical stone chips, minor scuffs and a few scratches, but otherwise driver level presentation. Door edge chips are found on both upper door edges, but overall, the body appears generally straight. The matte black trim is in very good to excellent condition, also appearing original to the car. The lenses, lighting, bumpers, accordion rubbers, and various trim and script are all in good condition. The sunroof is in good condition opening and closing with generally smooth actuation. A pair of headlight washers and under bumper fog lamps are installed. The panel gaps are consistent showing factory correct closures including both doors which exhibit very good parting lines and distinctive Porsche “ping” when closed. Outfitted with matching black webbed center and polished aluminum Mahle-BBS wheels, the rims are in good condition. The car wears a set of Sumitomo 225/50 R15 tires.

The interior is original to the car with appropriately worn seat and dash material surfaces typical of unrestored cars of this vintage. The door panels, carpeting, and side panels range in condition but generally are usable as is. The dashboard features nicely detailed instruments with a six-digit odometer indicating what are believed to be the original miles. An aftermarket Alpine AM/FM cassette radio with rear package shelf mounted speakers are installed. The AC compressor activates when turned on and the fan blower motor functions on different speeds, but the system does not deliver conditioned air. The side glass, defrost equipped rear window, and windshield are in excellent condition, each of which bear the original Sekurit or Sigla glass etch marks.

Under the hood, the engine bay delivers original specifications though showing signs of age as one might expect from an unrestored example. Finishes are typical for original cars with hardware and fittings reflective of Porsches from this era including correct stickers and markings, correct emissions equipment, proper injection plenum housing, and correct factory details. The front storage compartment is original, and well-maintained with a correct and original collapsing spare tire, felted black factory liner, and proper finishes consistent with original cars from this era. The factory VIN is stamped in the correct location and the smugglers compartment is clean, dry, and free of corrosion. The undercarriage is representative of an unrestored example with original floors in very good condition, correct suspension components, and a correct original gearbox. There are no visible signs of structural compromise to the floor or suspension mounting points.

The car starts, runs, stops and drives quite well. The shifter benefits from recent bushing replacement, the throttle responds properly, while the steering and overall handling are suitable for driving while sorting out the next steps based on the priorities of the next owner. The disc brakes will require some attention, the tires are older and will likely need to be replaced before driving extended miles at highway speeds, but otherwise, this desirable air-cooled 911 SC is an ideal candidate for an inspired enthusiast to bring it to the next level of Porsche excellence.
